قدalready كنتI had قصرتdrawn back منfrom الحبlove
وتبتand I repented منof همworry ومنand of كربِanguish
I had drawn back from love,
I had fallen short of love,
and repented of worry and anguish,
And repented of worries and sorrows.
وأُلْتand I turned منfrom عيشيmy life إلىto خفضهits ease
ناعمat ease بالٍmind فارغunburdened القلبthe heart
and settled into ease in my life,
I complained of my life becoming lowly,
at peace in mind, my heart unburdened,
A tender heart, empty inside.
حتىuntil بداappeared ليto me شادنa young gazelle أحورُdark-eyed
فكدتso I nearly أقضيmeet أبداًforever نحبيmy end
until a dark-eyed young gazelle appeared to me,
Until a slender gazelle appeared before me,
so I was forever on the verge of death.
And I almost spent my whole life yearning.
يغتصبseizes by force العشاقthe lovers ألبابهمtheir wits
فكانand it was ماwhat قدhad حارreturned ليto me لبيmy reason
He robs lovers of their wits,
Lovers have their minds stolen,
and what had returned to me was my reason.
So mine was confused.

Who, then, will help a lovesick man whose mind is in the hands
Who could control his mind in my hands?
of one gentle in coquetry, faithless of heart?
A flimsy heart, faithless and cold.
قدindeed قلتI said لماwhen لمdid not أجدI find حيلةa recourse

أحمدُAhmad قدindeed أوصاكمhas enjoined you ربيmy Lord
I said, when I could find no recourse:
I said when I could find no solution:
“Ahmad, my Lord has enjoined you
“I praise God, who instructed you.
بالجارconcerning the neighbor والجارand the neighbor لهhe has حرمةa sacred claim
عليكupon you والصاحبand the companion بالجنبat one's side
to care for the neighbor—the neighbor has a sacred claim
The neighbor has rights,
upon you—and for the companion at your side.
Upon you and the companion by your side.
أحمدAhmad ياO سؤليmy desire وياand O منيتيmy wish

Ahmad, O my desire and O my wish,
Ahmad, O my wish and desire,
pride in you is enough for me—enough for me.
Be content with me, I am content with you.
إنif كانis عيباًa fault عشقthe love of أهلthe people of الهوىpassion
فليسthen there is no فيin عشقكloving you منany عيبfault
If the love of lovers is a fault,
If love of the passionate is a fault,
then there is no fault in loving you.
Then there is no fault in loving you.

No master, joyful is that road.
