O goddess of poetry, long have my estrangement and patience lasted,
O mistress of poetry, long has been my estrangement and patience
And graying has overtaken me; gray hair brings disdain.
And old age has stripped me bare, while grey hairs scatter

A thousand years to you are a year, but
A thousand years for you is but a year, yet
For one bearing estrangement, a day is like an age.
He who bears estrangement, finds his day like an epoch

I called upon Homer and implored
Verse from him, strung as pearls are strung.
Poetry from him, arranging lines of pearls

And you glanced at Virgil, so the Romans grew drunk
And glanced at Virgil, for the Romans' intoxication
On meanings surpassing the choicest wine.
With meanings that surpassed the smoothness of wine

Or have you deserted a quarter where the Nile is a beloved companion
Where Pentaur was the poet of Egypt?
In it lives Bentures, once a poet of Egypt

O mistress of poetry, long has my estrangement, so return
All that has passed returns: such is existence's law,
All that is past must return, such is the rule of existence
