مُهلهلُMuhalhil أحشائيmy entrails عليكَover you تَقَطَّعُواthey have been torn apart
وأقرحَand made sore أجفانيmy eyelids أخوكَyour brother مُزَرَّعُMuzarraʿ
Muhalhil, my entrails have been torn apart over you.
My insides yearn for you, torn asunder,
And your brother Muzarraʿ has made my eyelids sore.
My eyelids ulcerated, your brother scattered abroad.
إلىto اللهGod أشكوI complain ماwhat تجنُّconceal جوانحيmy ribs
وماand what فيكماover you both منof غصَّةٍa choking grief أتجرَّعُI swallow
To God I complain of what my ribs conceal,
To God I complain of what my wings have borne
And of the choking grief I swallow over you both.
And of the anguish you two have caused me to drink.
فلولاكماso, were it not for you both ماnot إنat all (emphasizing negation) سلكتُI traversed تنائفاًtrackless wastes
ولولاكماand were it not for you both قدindeed كانthere would have been فيamong القومِthe people مَقْنَعُenough to satisfy
But for you both, I would never have crossed trackless wastes,
Were it not for you I'd not have walked the deserts,
And but for you both, I would have found contentment among the people.
Were it not for you I'd have sufficed among the tribe.
فإنso if ذَرفَتshed tears عَينايَmy two eyes وَجداًin grief عليكماover you both
ففيthen in دونless than ماwhat ألقاهُI endure it مبكىcause for weeping ومجْزَعُand cause for anguish
So if my eyes shed tears in grief for you both,
If my eyes rain tears and sorrow for you,
Then even less than what I endure is cause for weeping and anguish.
Beyond them lies weeping and unending grief.
أخافُI fear حِماماًdeath ياO مهلهلُMuhalhil باعثاًsummoning
وطيرُand the birds المناياdeath حائماتٌcircling وَوُقَّعُand perched
I fear a death that summons, O Muhalhil,
I fear, O Mahallal, a herald of woe,
While the birds of death are circling and perched.
And birds of death wheeling, alighting.
