مهلهلُMuhalhil قدindeed حلبتُI have milked شطورَthe teats of دهريmy lifetime
وكافحنيand confronted me بهاwith them الزمنtime العفوتُruthless
Muhalhil, I have milked the teats of my lifetime,
I have endured the turns of fate for long,
and ruthless time has confronted me with them.
And time has struggled against me with tribulations.
وجاريتُand I vied with الرجالًthe men بكلِّin every رَبعٍquarter
فأذعنَso yielded ليto me الحُتالةُthe dregs والرُّتوتُand the chieftains
I have vied with men in every quarter,
I associated with men in every region,
so the dregs and the chieftains yielded to me.
So the rash and thoughtless submitted to me.
فأوجعُyet the most painful ماof what أجنَّhas closed عليهover it قلبيmy heart
كريمٌa noble man غتَّهُcrushed him زمنٌan age غَتوتُcrushing
Yet the most painful thing my heart enfolds
What grieves my heart the most
is a noble man crushed by a crushing age.
Is a generous man whom time made thoughtless.
كفىit suffices حزناًas grief بضيعةat the neglect of ذيone possessing قديمٍancient honor
وأولادand the sons of العبيدِslaves لهاfor them الجفوتُabundance
It is grief enough that a man of ancient honor is neglected,
Sufficient is the sorrow for an ancient abode
while the sons of slaves enjoy abundance.
Whose children are uncouth and unkind.
وقدand indeed أسهرتُI kept awake عينيmy eyes بعدafter غمضٍclosed-eye rest
مخافةَfor fear أنthat تضيعَyou be lost إذاwhen فنيتُI perish
And I have kept my eyes sleepless after rest,
I have kept my eyes awake after closing them
for fear you might be lost when I perish.
Fearing they would be lost if I passed away.
وفيand in لطفthe kindness of المهيمنthe Guardian ليfor me عزاءٌconsolation
بمثلكin one like you إنif فنيتُI perish وإنand if بقيتُI remain
In the Guardian's kindness lies my consolation,
Yet in the grace of the Guardian I find solace
in one like you, whether I perish or live on.
With one like you whether I perish or remain.
وإنand if يشتدَّgrow strong عظمكyour bones بعدafter موتيmy death
فلاthen may not تقطعكcut you down جائحةٌa calamity سبوتannihilating
And if your bones grow strong after my death,
And if your glory grows after my death
may no annihilating calamity cut you down.
Let no misfortune interrupt your tranquility.
فجبso roam فيin الأرضthe earth وابغِand seek بهاin it علوماًbranches of knowledge
ولاand let not تلفتكturn you away عنfrom هذاthis الدُّسوتُthe seats of honor
So roam the earth and seek learning there,
Seek knowledge, aspire to the heights in the land
and let no seats of honor turn you from this.
And let not this seducer distract you.
وإنand if بخلَwithholds العليمُthe learned man عليكَfrom you يوماًone day
فذلَّthen humble yourself لهُbefore him ودَيدنُكَand your constant habit السُّكوتُsilence
And if a learned man withholds his learning from you one day,
If the Wise One withholds from you one day
then humble yourself before him, and make silence your constant habit.
Then submit to Him and your wont should be silence.
وقلand say بالعلمِwith knowledge كانَwas أبيmy father جواداًgenerous
يُقالit is asked فمنthen who أبوكَyour father فقلthen say يموتُYamut
And say, 'My father was generous with knowledge.'
Say through knowledge my father was generous,
When asked, 'Then who is your father?' say, 'Yamut.'
If asked who was your father, say "he passed away."

بعلمٍwith knowledge ليسَnot يجحدُهُdenies it البَهوتُthe slanderer
Those far and near will credit you
Both far and near will profess kinship with you
with knowledge that even a slanderer cannot deny.
Through a knowledge no impostors can dispute.
