مُهلهلُMuhalhil شفَّنيhas worn me thin صِغركyour tender age
وأَسبلand caused to flow أَدمعيmy tears عُسُرُكyour hardship
Muhalhil, your tender age has worn me thin;
Your childhood delights me,
and your hardship has made my tears flow.
And your hardship makes my tears flow,
لدىin أَكنافِthe regions of شامهمُtheir Syria
أَموتُI die فيمَّحنيthen effaces me (unclear form) أثرُكyour trace
In the regions of their Syria,
In the bosoms of my people,
I die, and your trace effaces me [wording uncertain].
I die when your track touches me,
ولوand had سومحتُI been granted respite فيin عُمُريmy lifetime
لجَلَّwould surely have been great لديهمُamong them خطرُكyour standing
Had I been granted more years of life,
If I wronged you in my life,
your standing among them would have been great.
Your danger would be grave to them,
فواso, alas! أَسفيmy sorrow علىover لُمَةٍa company of people
يَطولُis long إِليهمُto them سَفرُكyour journey
Alas, my sorrow over a company of people—
Oh my sorrow for a nation,
long is your journey to them!
Whose journey to it is long for you,
وإِنand if أَهلكI perish فإِنthen indeed اللهGod
دونrather than الخلقِcreation لِيfor me وَزرُكyour refuge
And if I perish, then God,
And if you perish, then God,
rather than any creature, is your refuge for my sake.
Not people, is my solace for you.
