O tamarisks of the plain in the valley of Tūḍiḥ,
O maidens of the valley, your longing in my heart is endless
Long is my yearning for your shade.
O maidens of the valley, my heart relies on your goodness, though it's little
وياand O أثلاتِtamarisks القاعِthe plain قلبيmy heart مُوكلٌbound
بكُنّto you وجدوىand the benefit خَيرِكُنَّyour bounty قليلُslight
And O tamarisks of the plain, my heart is bound
O maidens of the valley, I'm tired of my company, will your shade give me rest?
To you, and the benefit of your bounty is slight.
O maidens of the valley, my outward appearance belies my inner feelings
وياand O أَثلاتِtamarisks القاعthe plain قدalready ملّgrew tired of صحبتيmy companions
مسيريmy journey فهلso is there فيin ظلكنyour shade مقيلُa noonday resting place
And O tamarisks of the plain, my companions have grown tired
Oh, is there a way to smell the flowers and gaze at the flasks before death?
Of my journey; so is there a noonday resting place in your shade?
Let me drink from the spring of Hujayla, to cure my illness before death
وياand O أثلاتِtamarisks القاعِthe plain ظاهرُthe outward appearance ماwhat بَداappeared

And O tamarisks of the plain, what has appeared outwardly
I tell myself I won't return, so sadness dwells in my heart
On my body is a sign of what lies in my heart.
I want to go back but debt holds me down if I try

Ah, to smell the lavender and cast a glance
At Qarqarā before death—is there a way?

So that I might drink a draught of al-Ḥujaylāʾ’s water,
By which an ailing man might be healed before death.
أُحَدِّثُI tell عنكِabout you النفسَthe soul أنthat لستُI am not راجعاًreturning
إليكِto you فَحُزنيso my sorrow فيin الفُؤادthe heart دَخِيلُdeeply lodged
I tell my soul, concerning you, that I shall not return
To you; so my sorrow is lodged deep within my heart.

I wish to descend toward her, but am held back,
Whenever I attempt it, by a heavy debt upon me.
