Is it true, O servants of God, that I am not to gaze

ever upon Qarqara and its dust-gray hills?

It is as if my heart, whenever a rider passes,

were the two wings of a raven seeking to rise toward its nest.

Whenever a company of travelers sets out toward al-Yamama,

longing calls to you, and your heart is stirred by remembrance.

I say to Musa, while my tears seem like

streams of water flowing through their channels:

"Ah, does an old man, sixty years of age,

who weeps in longing for al-Yamama, have any excuse?"

He replied, "Weeping surely heals love's anguish,

and nothing avails more than solace and patience."

Ah, my grief at the love I keep concealed,

and the hidden yearning deep within me for Hajr!

    وكان فِراقيها أمَرَّ من الصَّبرِ

    I went away from her unwillingly and left her;

and my parting from her was more bitter than aloes.

So, O rider of the thick-cheeked she-camel, may you return unharmed,

and may you always be sheltered from the perils of fate.

When you reach al-'Ird, call out within its expanse:

"May you, though far away, be watered by streaming rain!

For you are a valley dear to me,

though you are visited only at long intervals."

Perhaps He who ordains all things with His knowledge

will one day return me to it, as decreed,

so that an eye that never tires of weeping may rest,

and a heart no rebuke can restrain may regain its senses.

They say that separation heals love's anguish,

yet separation has only doubled the pain within me.

Surely your drinking water at al-Anqad, murky or clear,

is more honorable and safer than your voyaging on the sea.

If you do not reflect on your own welfare in solitude,

sorrows will surround you from quarters you do not foresee.

Credit dealings with the ruler are a gateway to humiliation,

and the closest thing to contentment and poverty.

What sours me on all the kindness I have shown

to people is the scant gratitude I have encountered.
