Indeed Umm al-Khushayf came by night, and she

is ever a night visitor when slumber lays the people low.

Ah, a liver seared with heat! Indeed it

throbs for fear of separation's renewed blows.

A band remained, of people dear

to my heart, at Dhat al-Ghada; another band departed.

Alas for a sorrowful man's longing—he passes the day, his heart

a faithful captive to soft-skinned women in curtained chambers.

They would break camp if, one evening, there blew for them

a south wind, and if lightning flashed before them.

It seemed the trailing ends of patterned cloth, when they laid them

at dawn upon the white camels, were clusters of dates.

And among them was a tall, full-bodied woman, of womankind's Bactrian breed,

who all but towers above the white crests of the clouds.

Fair-skinned; as for the sandhill of her hindquarters,

it is soft, yielding sand; as for her waist, it is slender.
