The chosen describer did not exaggerate in describing

The utmost reach of goodness and generosity,

In saying, “That belongs to Bakr alone forever,

To the exclusion of all humankind, the distant and those of established standing.”

O mender of severed kinship ties—what bonds were joined

By your kinship, through beneficence and favors!

I said when they hurried away with him

Toward al-Baqi‘—ah, by God, what a burial cairn!

If the dead knew what one bereaved of him endures,

You would know that I have my share of pain.

Though evening finds you captive in a tomb amid a barren waste,

Yet you had been our safeguard against destitution.

    يَجْلُو جبينُك عَنَّا حالكَ الظُّلَمِ

    You were the noble one, and our refuge in calamities;

Your brow dispelled from us the blackest darkness.

You bequeathed us glory—a glory that cannot be challenged

By a hostile rival, highly skilled in speech,

Except by what all people might say:

“Aja’s summits have vanished, and the crag from Khiyam.”
