    And I went to lament my heartache to the ruins.

    So marvel at one who laments his heartache to lifeless things,

    And at a sorrowful man whose life slips away,

    Through his fate, between hardship and opposition.

    فاقدحْ لأبناء الزنا بالزِّناد

    You wronged me, O Time, and turned dark for me;

    So strike sparks with the fire-steel for the sons of fornication.

    And if we controlled our affairs in what

    We see, then the path of right guidance would be clear.

    So, ah—if only this sigh availed for a journey,

    For which I would separate the saddle and its pads,

    To al-Fustat's sanctuary—were it possible for me—

    I would lodge at Kalwadh with Kayqubad,

    محمدٍ المحمودِ ربِّ الأياد

    A guest of the one eager to be praised,

    Muhammad the praised, lord of benefactions;

    ولم أُرِدْ بعد لِقاهُ مُراد

    The utmost of wishes, the Bayezid of wealth;

    And after meeting him, I desired no Murad.

    A prodigy of generosity—rather, a breath of the All-

    Merciful—rather, rain for the harsh years.
