فأقبلتso I came أسعىrunning كالعجولlike a bereft she-camel أبادرI hasten
I saw Zuhayr beneath Khalid’s chest.
I saw Zuhair beneath the striking Khaled
So I came running like a bereft she-camel, hastening forward,
So I hurried like the swift horses charge
إلىtoward بطلينtwo warriors يعترانgrappling with one another كلاهماeach of them
يريدseeks رياشfittings السيفthe sword والسيفand the sword نادرfallen loose
toward two warriors grappling, each of them
Toward two heroes both keyed up
seeking the sword’s fittings, while the sword lay fallen.
Wanting to unsheathe swords in hand so rare
فشلّتso may it wither يمينيmy right hand يومthe day أضربI strike خالداًKhalid
ويمنعهand protects him منّيfrom me الحديدthe iron المظاهرlayered
So may my right hand wither for the day I struck Khalid,
My right hand failed the day I struck Khaled
while layered iron protected him from me.
And the glittering iron foiled my affair
فياoh, then ليتwould that أنّيthat I قبلbefore أيّامthe days of خالدٍKhalid
وقبلand before زهيرZuhayr لمdid not تلدنيbear me تماضرTamadur
Oh, would that, before the days of Khalid,
Oh how I wish before the days of Khaled
and before Zuhayr’s, Tamadur had never borne me!
And before Zuhair I was not born to my mother
لعمريby my life لقدindeed بشّرتyou were given glad tidings بيof me إذwhen ولدتنيyou bore me
فماذاwhat, then الذيthat which ردّتbrought back عليكto you البشائرthe glad tidings؟
By my life, you were indeed given glad tidings of me when you bore me;
By my life when I was born she gave glad tidings
what, then, have those glad tidings brought you in return?
So what are these tidings that came back to her?
فلاthen let ... not يدعنيcall me قوميmy people صريحاًa trueborn son بحرّةٍof a freeborn woman
لئنif indeed كنتI am مقتولاًslain ويسلمand escapes unharmed عامرAmir
Then let my people not call me a freeborn woman’s trueborn son
My people will not leave me clearly alive
if I am slain while Amir escapes unharmed.
If I am killed and Aamer survives
فطرthen fly خالدٌKhalid إنif كنتyou are تستطيعable to طيرةًa flight
ولاand do not تقعنalight إلاّunless وقلبكwhile your heart حاذرwary
Then fly, Khalid, if you can take flight,
Khaled flee if you can take flight
and never alight unless your heart is wary.
And do not fall except with a cautious heart
أتتكwill come to you المناياthe fates of death إنif بقيتyou live on بضربةwith a blow
تفارقyou part with منهاbecause of it العيشlife والموتand death حاضرat hand
Death will come to you, if you live on, with a blow
Death will come to you with one stroke
that makes you part with life, with death at hand.
Leaving this life and death ever present
