يا ليل ظلامك يحبسني

وجلال سكونك يخرسني

O night, your darkness imprisons me.

And the majesty of your stillness strikes me dumb.

And the majesty of your stillness renders me speechless

وتهز القلب هواجسه

وتهز القلب هواجسه

فتحمسه ويحمسني

فتحمسه ويحمسني

Its misgivings shake the heart,

And stirs the heart's anxieties

So they rouse it, and it rouses me.

Inflaming it and inflaming me

إبليس يحاول وسوستي

إبليس يحاول وسوستي

لكن ما اسطاع يوسوسني

لكن ما اسطاع يوسوسني

Iblis tries to whisper temptation to me,

The devil tries to tempt me

But he could not tempt me with his whispers.

But he cannot successfully whisper to me

فأصانعه وأصارعه

فأصانعه وأصارعه

وأقارعه إذ يسلسني

وأقارعه إذ يسلسني

So I humor him and wrestle him,

So I defy him and wrestle with him

And I contend with him as he makes me pliant.

And repel him when he tries to enchain me

وأجالده ووأجاهده

وأجالده ووأجاهده

والذكر الدائم يحرسني

والذكر الدائم يحرسني

And I battle him and strive against him,

And I battle him and struggle against him

And constant remembrance guards me.

And the constant remembrance protects me

فأعاف النوم وأهجره

فأعاف النوم وأهجره

ما بين الغفوة والوسن

ما بين الغفوة والوسن

So I spurn sleep and forsake it,

So I abandon sleep and shun it

Between a doze and drowsiness.

In the space between drowsiness and wakefulness

وأشد القلب بخالقه

وأشد القلب بخالقه

وجلال الهيبة يؤنسني

وجلال الهيبة يؤنسني

And I bind the heart to its Creator,

And I strengthen my heart with its Creator

And the majesty of awe comforts me.

And the awe of majesty consoles me

وإذا ما نمت على تعب

وإذا ما نمت على تعب

فرسول الله يحسسني

فرسول الله يحسسني

And when I fall asleep, worn out,

And if I fall asleep exhausted

Then God's Messenger stirs my senses.

The Messenger of Allah senses me

ويمد الكف أصافحه

ويمد الكف أصافحه

وأقلبه إذ يلمسني

وأقلبه إذ يلمسني

And he extends his hand; I shake hands with him,

And extends his palm, I shake his hand

And I turn it over as he touches me.

And turn it over when he touches me

فأحس الرحمة تغمرني

فأحس الرحمة تغمرني

والذكر الدافيء يهمسني

والذكر الدافيء يهمسني

So I feel mercy wash over me,

So I feel mercy envelop me

And warm remembrance whispers to me.

And the warm remembrance whispers to me

وحنان السجدة يرفعني

وحنان السجدة يرفعني

يوم الميزان ويلبسني

يوم الميزان ويلبسني

And the tenderness of prostration lifts me

And the tenderness of prostration lifts me

On the Day of the Scales, and clothes me

On the Day of Judgement and dresses me

ثوب الايمان فلا أخشى

ثوب الايمان فلا أخشى

بخسا ربي لا يبخسني

بخسا ربي لا يبخسني

In the robe of faith, so I do not fear

In the garment of faith, so I have no fear

Being shortchanged: my Lord does not shortchange me.

That my Lord will shortchange me

يا ليل قيامك مدرسة

يا ليل قيامك مدرسة

فيها القرآن يدرسني

فيها القرآن يدرسني

O night, keeping vigil in you is a school;

O night, your standing in prayer is a school

Within it, the Quran teaches me

Wherein the Quran teaches me

معنى الاخلاص فألزمه

معنى الاخلاص فألزمه

دربا بالجنة يجلمني

دربا بالجنة يجلمني

The meaning of sincerity, so I adhere to it

As a path that 'shears me' in Paradise [wording unclear].

A path to Paradise that protects me

ويبصرني كيف الدنيا

ويبصرني كيف الدنيا

بالأمل الكاذب تغمسني

بالأمل الكاذب تغمسني

And it shows me how the world

And shows me how the world

Immerses me in false hope,

With deceptive hopes immerses me

مثل الحرباء تلونها

مثل الحرباء تلونها

بالاثم تحاول تطمسني

بالاثم تحاول تطمسني

Its changing colors like a chameleon's.

Like a chameleon that changes its colors

With sin, it tries to blot me out.

With sin it tries to erase me

فأباعدها وأعاندها

فأباعدها وأعاندها

وأراقبها تتهجسني

وأراقبها تتهجسني

So I keep it at a distance and defy it,

So I distance myself from it and defy it

And I watch it as it harbors thoughts of me.

And watch it make me doubt

فأشد القلب بخالقه

فأشد القلب بخالقه

والذكر الدائم يحرسني

والذكر الدائم يحرسني

So I bind the heart to its Creator,

Thus I strengthen my heart with its Creator

And constant remembrance guards me.
