And many a reproachful woman rose by night to chide me

for longing, yet she did not wipe ardent love from my heart.

Then what fault is mine if I love the land of my clan

and hate the tamarisks of al-Quṣaybah?

If a wind could carry the whispered message of a sender

full of affection, I would confide in the south wind at al-Naqb,

and say to her: Carry my message to them,

and do not mix it—long may your good fortune last—with dust.

For whenever a north wind blows, I ask her:

Has Ṣaddāḥ of al-Numayrah drawn any nearer?
