تلاقوا عداً خيلي على سفوان
Hold back some of your threats, sons of Shayban.
You shall meet my cavalry [tomorrow] at Safwan.
تلاقواyou shall meet جياداًfine steeds لاnot تحيدturn aside عنfrom الوغىbattle
تلاقوا جياداً لا تحيد عن الوغى
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle غدتthey advance فيinto المأزقthe narrow battlefield المتدانيclose-pressed
إذا ما غدت في المأزق المتداني
You shall meet steeds that do not turn aside from battle,
when they advance into the close-pressed battlefield.
تلاقوهمyou shall meet them فتعرفواthen you shall learn كيفhow صبرهمtheir endurance
تلاقوهم فتعرفوا كيف صبرهم
علىunder ماwhat جنتhas inflicted فيهمupon them يدthe hand of الحدثانtime's vicissitudes
على ما جنت فيهم يد الحدثان
You shall meet them and learn how steadfastly they endure
what the hand of time has inflicted upon them.
مقاديمdaring warriors وصالونcontinually linking فيamid الروعbattle's terror خطوهمtheir strides
مقاديم وصالون في الروع خطوهم
بكلwith every رقيقkeen-edged الشفرتينboth cutting edges يمانYemeni
بكل رقيق الشفرتين يمان
Daring warriors who, amid battle's terror, link their strides
with every Yemeni sword, keen on both edges.
إذاwhen استنجدوتunclear; apparently 'they were called upon for aid' لمdid not يسألواthey ask منwhoever دعاهمsummoned them
إذا استنجدوت لم يسألوا من دعاهم
لأيةfor which حربٍwar أمor بأيin which مكانplace
لأية حربٍ أم بأي مكان
When [called upon for aid], they do not ask their summoner,
"For which war, or in what place?"
