We kept faith with ‘Amr on the day when ‘Amr seemed

an outcast expelled by Madhhij and the Sakasik.

An envoy of God’s Messenger—how great his claim

upon us! And whoever does not recognize that right is doomed.

We sent him back; Lu’ayy son of Ghalib was not reviled

on his account, now that the paths had closed in on him.

‘Ibad and Jayfar among us sheltered him,

and Zalim, to whom the destitute resort.

So ‘Amr was safe in Medina,

laughing heartily, with black cloaks draped over him.

We are a people among whom a neighbor is secure

when the day is pitch-dark, its sun dimmed.

This is what Niswat al-Khayr enjoined upon his people,

and ‘Imran, and Malik, the defender of honor.
