Were you stirred with longing, or did there rise before your eyes at dawn
Were you delighted or did your eyes rise at dawn
Laden caravans between al-Makaymin and al-Zujayj?
Between al-Makaymin and az-Zujaj, litters borne aloft?

Resounding as the drivers take turns urging them; their halting
Women chanting, detained by warriors, though daylight seemed brief
In broad daylight until evening is brief.
Till eventide, as little time slipped slowly by.

When they descended to Ar'ar and were tossed to and fro
When they alighted at ‘Ar‘ar, from them issued
Across its rugged tracts and level plains,
Their doleful throngs and barren plains.

Heading rightward, not making for Ghumara,
Turning right, they spurned the gloomy gloom
Toward al-Bayad, as though they were palm trees.
Toward meadows of white, like date palms in silhouette.

بَينَ الجَوانِحِ وَالحِجابُ دَخيلُ
An unspoken concern that I concealed has barred sleep,
A pounding head I nursed, concealed between
Between my ribs and the diaphragm, lodged deep within.
Vitals and veil, an intrusive ache.

It walks beside me, a bedfellow in sleep, as though
It walks with me, like wisps of dreams, as though
It were drawing me along; it rests at noon wherever I rest.
Pursuing me, resting wherever I rest.

And it is as though my night, when its sun sets,
My night, when its sun sets, seems yoked
Is joined to the darkness of another just like it.
To the blackness of one just like it, joined together.

I watch the stars; when a star vanishes,
I tend the stars when one constellation sets
I see others moving like a threaded row.
And espy another throng revolving like a mill.

Indeed, a pampered woman comforts me; she has
And a lissome beauty justifies herself to me
Lovely hips when she lays aside her clothes.
When robes slip off an exquisite, perfect form.

The kisser is cooled by the sweetness of her mouth,
The kisser is chilled by her mouth’s sweetness
Slender-gummed, as though it were polished
Like smooth Syrian glass, it appears to me.

With water from a morning shower, breaking up after
From the water of a departing rain shower
Torrents have swept across its gravelly beds.
Whose downpour scoured the land, leaving rivulets.

So his heart is pledged to her in affection,
So her heart is held ransom by sincere devotion
And their captive is tormented and fettered.
While their hearts are tormented, shackled prisoners.

شَهمٌ إِذا سُئِلَ النَجاءَ رَجيلُ
Will a burden-bearing mount indeed reach her country—
Can one ferrying them reach their lands,
Spirited and strong-legged when speed is asked of it?
A valiant man sought for protection, though modest?

It walks with a swaying gait, bending its neck; and when it runs,
Walking a second time with little provisions,
Its nose-ring and braided rein grip it tightly.
When he passes on, need and poverty beset him.

تَعبٌ وَأَبطَأَ سَيرُهُنَّ ذَميلُ
It wears out the other mounts; in its shoulders and backbone
The camel sags with its shoulders and stern,
Is weariness, and their slowest gait is a brisk trot.
Fatigue slowing its pace to a weary trudge.

And when a rider sniffs, it is as though
He were urging that very mount on, or charging at it.
He is rebuking it or attacking it fiercely.

Like a harried, hoarse-voiced wild ass steering a herd,
Like an outcast camel, turning over a waterskin
Among them pregnant females like bows, and others without young.
In which are pregnant she-camels like resin and motley camels.

They grazed the meadows of A'amiq until, when
Gardens of deep valleys spread till when
Not a drop remained of the dregs of day,
Little of the day’s burden remained.

They stretched out their necks there and hurried forward,
They unfurled them with it, then huddled up
His ringing cry sounding over their hindquarters.
With tinkling on their robes heard faintly.

They crowd past the side of his chest and forehead,
They butt his flank and brow
And his braying resounds along their tracks.
As tracks upon them piled up.

Until they reached a watering-place at al-Azariq,
Until they reached a watering-place amid the thickets
With late afternoon their portion of the bright day.
With remnants of daylight their morning draught.

They sniffed it, their spirits startled,
So he revived them while their spirits, invigorated,
Approaching to cover the water, then turning away.
Approach the water then turn away to change.

Skittish, they feel fright at the watering-place whenever
A sun they find, whenever they near
They approach water or a thicket is disturbed.
Water or stir vegetation, shadows them.

They approach; there they turn back, seeking to drink,
They draw near, their complexions then change, blushing
With burning thirst from the searing heat of the simoom.
While the fervor of heat exhausts them.

فَيضٌ يُرِدنَ مَكانَهُ وَضُحولُ
Sleek-backed, they are turned away from desire
The smooth poems portray them distracted by love
By abundant water, whose place they seek, and shallow pools.
An outpouring they desire instead of this trickle.

They came to drink when an enveloping darkness hid them,
Thus they arrived as a gloomy evening enveloped them,
Deeply shadowed, bewildering the eyes within it.
Eyes baffled by its shade.

Water whose surfaces shimmer in the evening;
Water whose surface glitters at dusk
You see it sway under the sweeping force of the winds.
Seems to tilt away from the wind’s push.

So they drank, then set out not fully quenched
Wearing anklets of the color of its black mud.
By the ruddy color left on them from its turbid waters.

إِنَّindeed الوَليدَal-Walid لَهُhe has عَلَيَّupon me فُضولُmany favors

So mention the Commander of the Faithful with praise:
Recall the Commander of the Faithful with praise -
Indeed, al-Walid has bestowed many favors upon me.
Al-Walid has outstanding merit over me.

I praise him, sparing no effort, and know that he
I laud but do not exaggerate, and know
Is above all the praise I give and all I say.
He is beyond what I extol and say.
وَلَأَمدَحَنَّكَand I shall surely praise you مِدحَةًa praise مَذكورَةًmemorable

إن لَم تَغَلني قَبلَ ذَلِكَ غولُ
And I shall surely praise you with memorable praise,
I will praise you with famed eulogy
Unless a fatal calamity carries me off before then.
If death does not take me before that time.

I have indeed thanked you for what you bestowed upon me,
I thanked you for what you granted me
And you approved my station—where, then, should I go?
And you approved of my status - so where can I depart?

He has two hands: one whose punishment is feared,
He has two hands: one feared for punishment
And one that flows with bounty and bestows gifts.
And one dripping with bounty and bestowing.

You see the seekers of bounty journeying to him;
You see rebels seeking his goodness
From every quarter a road leads to him.
From every direction, all roads leading to him.

They come and go - some transient
Are travelers moving on and others remaining as guests.
Others settling down permanently.

They share virtues at his dwelling
An abode inherited by delegations in unbroken succession.
An abode generations of delegations inherit.

You see his dwellings as though their soil,
You’d think the dust of his dwellings
Amid the saddles, were sieved and sifted.
Was sifted earth amidst the encampments.

The mounted caravans have left a dust-wallow there;
The riders' mounts left there a rubbing place
You see its fine dust swirling in the evening.
So their foolish ones roam in the evening.

God gave your father command of His armies,
God granted your father command of his troops -
And the gift of the Lord of the worlds is bountiful.
The Giving of the Lord of the Worlds is plentiful.

He shepherded well and every successor
Is examined and questioned about what he tended.
Will be asked about what he shepherded.

And God ordained the caliphate for you after him -
And your Lord's decree takes effect and is fulfilled.
The decree of your Lord is carried out.

Behold, your house, when its pillars are reckoned, has
So your house, when its pillars are counted,
Breadth surpassing other houses, and height.
Has greater width than other houses.

Stands a scion, nobly rooted where its two branches join.
Branches join, an integral lineage.

Indeed, the caliphate could not be borne
None could bear the caliphate
Except by a man able to shoulder grave difficulties.
Except one capable of solving predicaments.

He is mild in religion and perfects it,
Forbearance that weighs heavy when forbearances are weighed.
Wise when souls are weighed, heavy.

When the possessors of noble qualities vie in boasting,
And when the generous compete, their people
And every man of lineage has a brother and close friend,
Each have a brother and friend.

Over all the greatness they recount there surged
The lofty qualities they mention are eclipsed
A vast swell and mighty flood from the overflow of your sea.
By the overflowing sea that is you, turbulent and roiling.

And when they promise people good, it comes to them
When people expect good, you come to them
Freely—and you carry out what you say.
With pardons while you do what you promise.

A matter our Lord ordained through your tongue;
A matter our Lord decreed through your tongue
So your bounty is neither hard to obtain nor delayed.
He then aided you – no hardship or delay.
