طِرادُ المَسالِحِ أَو سَلهَبِ
Upon every tall, long-bodied mare worn lean
By skirmishing with armed patrols, or a tall stallion,
أَشَثَّshaggy شَخيصٍlarge and imposing كَتَيسِlike a he-goat الفَلاthe wilderness (الفلاة, continued)
أَشَثَّ شَخيصٍ كَتَيسِ الفَلا
ةِcompletion of الفلاة: wilderness يَستَنُّbounds; gallops freely أَوor جُؤذُرُwild cow's calf الحُلَّبِḥullab plants
ةِ يَستَنُّ أَو جُؤذُرُ الحُلَّبِ
Shaggy and imposing, like a goat of the wilderness,
Bounding, or a wild calf among ḥullab plants.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle تَصَعلَكَgrew lean مِنfrom حَشوِهِhis belly's bulk
إِذا ما تَصَعلَكَ مِن حَشوِهِ
فَأَصبَحَand so became كَالفَرَدِlike the solitary wild bull الأَشعَبِwith widely spread horns
فَأَصبَحَ كَالفَرَدِ الأَشعَبِ
When he sheds bulk from his belly,
And becomes like a lone, wide-horned bull,
أُمِرَّتwere twisted taut حَوامِلُsupporting sinews أَوbeginning of أوصاله: his limbs صالِهِcompletion of أوصاله: his limbs
أُمِرَّت حَوامِلُ أَو صالِهِ
كَماjust as تَستَمِرُّare tightly twisted قُوىstrands القِنَّبِhemp
كَما تَستَمِرُّ قُوى القِنَّبِ
The sinews supporting his limbs are twisted taut,
As strands of hemp are tightly twisted.
وَأَشرَفَand rose above حارِكُهُhis withers وَالقَناand the neck (القناة, continued)
وَأَشرَفَ حارِكُهُ وَالقَنا
ةُcompletion of القناة: neck مِنهُof him عَلىabove طاءَةِhollow المَركَبِthe riding-seat
ةُ مِنهُ عَلى طاءَةِ المَركَبِ
And his withers and neck rise
Above the hollow of the riding-seat,
عَلىalthough (with أن) أَنَّthat مُجتَمَعَmeeting place القُصرَيَيْthe two short ribs (القصريين, continued)
عَلى أَنَّ مُجتَمَعَ القُصرَيَيْ
نcompletion of القصريين: two short ribs لَيسَis not بِغَوطٍsunken وَلاnor أَحدَبِhumped
ن لَيسَ بِغَوطٍ وَلا أَحدَبِ
Though the place where his two short ribs meet
Is neither sunken nor humped.
كُمَيتٌa bay horse كَأَنَّas though عَلىupon مَتنِهِhis back
كُمَيتٌ كَأَنَّ عَلى مَتنِهِ
سَبائِكُcast ingots مِنfrom قِطَعِpieces المذهَبِgold
سَبائِكُ مِن قِطَعِ المذهَبِ
A bay horse, as though upon his back
Lay ingots cast from pieces of gold.
