Had I obeyed you, O Ghirar, you would have clothed me

at every gathering in garments of humiliation.

Is straying in a night whose flanks have fallen

more excusable among people, or straying by day?

Qahtan is our father, to whom we are ascribed,

and Khuzaymah's father is Khindaf, son of Nizar.

Shall we sell our father, to whom we are ascribed,

for an absent, hidden father of clans?

That bargain—we will not agree to its like:

gold sold for tin and lead.

I would then indeed be like an arrow-shaft made into a spindle:

it clothes the clans while itself is bare and naked.
