وَقَضىand satisfied لُبانَتَهُits longing فَأَقصَرَso desisted وَاِنتَهىand stopped
The heart has turned away from idleness and youthful folly,
The heart has turned away from youth and idleness
and satisfied its longing, then desisted and stopped.
And spent its exuberance, so it has shortened and ended
وَأَرَحتُand I brought home حِلماًgood sense كانَhad been عَنّيaway from me عازِباًstraying

And I brought home good sense that had strayed from me,
And I have rested a dream that was absent from me
for a young man indeed returns to his inborn nature.
And the youth will surely come to his turn
وَعَلِمتُand I learned أَنَّthat المَرءَa man غَيرُnot مُخَلَّدٍimmortal
وَالعِلمُand knowledge يَشفيcures قَدindeed عَلِمتُI have learned مِنَfrom العَمىblindness
And I have learned that a man is not immortal,
And I knew that man is not immortal
and knowledge, I have learned, cures blindness.
And knowledge cures, as I have known from blindness
وَالشَيبُand gray hair يَختَلِسُsteals away الشَبابَyouth تَخَوُّناlittle by little

And gray hair steals youth away, little by little,
And grey hair stealthily steals away youth by betrayal
until a man is left with diminished strength.
Until man returns diminished in strength

Our souls advance toward the utmost trials,
It raises our souls to the utmost tribulations
and live on cherished hope and wishes.
And lives with hopeful wishing and desire
ياO مَنyou who يَرىsee بَرقاًa lightning flash أَرِقتُI lay sleepless لِضَوئِهِbecause of its light
أَمسىat evening it was بَلَألَأَglittering فيin حَوارِكِهِits withers العُلىlofty
O you who see a lightning flash whose glow kept me awake,
O you who see a lightning flash I was sleepless for its glow
at evening it glittered in the cloud's lofty withers.
It glittered at night in its sublime horizons
لَمّاwhen تَلَحلَحَlingered بِالبَياضِat al-Bayad عَماؤُهُits cloud-mass
When its cloud-mass lingered at al-Bayad,
When its mist glittered with whiteness
around al-Gharifa, it nearly settled—or did settle.
Around the hill, it almost swayed and swayed
فَأَصابَthen struck أَيمَنُهُits right flank المَزاهِرَal-Mazahir كُلَّهاall of them

Then its right flank struck all of al-Mazahir,
So its right side hit all the flowers
and its left engulfed Uthayda, then al-Hasha.
And its left side embraced the gardens and farms

It draws near, and its low clouds mount the hills,
They come near so its pillars travel
until, just when one says, 'It is sinking into dust,' it rises aloft.
Until when it is said, it rushes away
فَكَأَنَّهُthen as though it were لَمّاwhen تَكَشَّفَcleared away وَدقُهُits rain

Then it seemed, when its rain cleared
So it is as if when its cover was removed
over al-Samawa's expanse and it rose above al-Lawa,
The sky appeared and it rose above the twisting roads

a spur among the ridges, with a small band upon it,
A pillar of ropes in it has a defect
throwing flames into ghada wood.
They throw fire at the wood of dryness

A roaring cloud—when it comes upon a land
The clouds of rain, when it touches a land
that the rains have not watered for a while, it weeps,
Not watered by rain for a long time, wept
وَيَمُجُّand spews ريقَتَهُits spittle بِكُلِّacross every تَنوفَةٍdesert waste

سَحَّthe gushing of المَزادُthe waterskins إِذاwhen تَبَعَّجَburst open وَاِنفَرىand split apart
and spews its spittle across every desert waste,
And it pushes its saliva with every gust
like the gush of waterskins when they burst and split apart.
The clouds dispersed when they were stirred and scattered
جَرَتِswept along الجَنوبُthe south wind بِهِwith it فَمالَso it veered مُياسِراًleftward
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen بَلَغَreached الفَوارِعَthe heights مِنof سَوىSawa
The south wind carried it along, so it veered left,
The south winds carried it, so it tilted to the left
until, when it reached the heights of Sawa
Until when it reached the precipices beyond the distance
وَأَصابَand struck قُلَّةَthe summit of غرَّبGharrab بَعَجَتdrove forcefully بِهِit onward
ريحٌa wind شَآمِيَةٌfrom al-Sham فَيامَنَso it veered right وَاِنتَحىand changed course
and struck Gharrab's summit, it was driven on
And hit a low area, it leaned to the west
by a wind from al-Sham; so it veered right and changed course.
A northern wind, so it bent to the right and withdrew
فَاِنصَبَthen poured down فيin الأَوداهِal-Awdah يَلمَعُflashes بَرقُهُits lightning

Then it poured down over al-Awdah, its lightning flashing,
So it poured in the valleys, its lightning flashed
now you discern it, and now it cannot be seen.
Sometimes visible and sometimes unseen

It leaves the low-lying ground as though it were
It leaves the quiet place as if it were
a sea, with echoes answering one another along its shores.
A sea echoing in its sides
