ألاah! هلْwill...? فؤاديmy heart عنfrom صِباyouthful passion اليومِtoday صافحُturning away
وهلْand will...? ماwhat وأتْshe promised ليلىLayla بهِconcerning it لكَfor you ناجحُfulfilled
Ah, will my heart today turn away from youthful passion?
Alas! Does my heart now converse with the youth of old?
And will what Layla promised come true for you?
Has Layla brought you any message for me today?
وهلْand will there be...? فيin غدٍtomorrow إنْif كانَthere is فيin اليومِtoday عِلّةٌan excuse
سَراحٌrelease لماfor what تلويwithhold النفوسُthe souls الشحائحُthe grudging ones
And will there be tomorrow, if today offers an excuse,
And if tomorrow heals what ails my soul this day,
release for what grudging souls withhold?
Will the anguished spirit find respite from its grief?
سَقتنيshe gave me drink بشُربِwith a draught المُستضافِthe guest فصرّدتْthen she gave too little
كماjust as صرّدgave scant drink to اللّوحَthe thirsty man النّطافُthe pools of water الضحاضحُthe shallow ones
She gave me a guest’s draught, yet left me thirsty,
She gave me to drink like a guest, so I warbled
as shallow pools give scant drink to a parched man.
Like the slate when the child scribbles and scratches.
ولوand if أنَّthat ليلىLayla الأخيليةَal-Akhyaliyya سَلّمتshe greeted
عليَّto me ودونيand over me جَنْدلٌrocks وصفائحُand stone slabs
And if Layla al-Akhyaliyya were to offer greetings
If my Layla had but greeted me when she passed,
to me, with rocks and stone slabs lying over me,
Though armed guards stood between us like walls,
I would return the greeting تسليمَa greeting البشاشةِcheerfulness أوزقاor cried out
إليهاto her صدىًan owl منfrom جانبِthe side القَبرthe grave صائحُcrying aloud
I would return a cheerful greeting, or there would cry out
I'd have greeted her in turn with a shout from my grave -
to her an owl, calling from beside the grave.
Just an echo from the edge of the tomb.
ولوand if أنَّthat ليلىLayla فيin السماءthe heavens لأصعدتُI would raise
بطَرفيwith my gaze إلىtoward ليلىLayla العيونُthe eyes الكواشحُthe hostile ones
And if Layla were in the heavens, I would raise
If Layla were in the heavens, I'd have climbed there
my gaze toward Layla, despite the hostile eyes.
On my eyelashes up to her bright, shy eyes.
ولوand if ارسلتْshe sent وحياًa secret message إليّto me عرفتُهُI would recognize it
معَwith الرّيحِthe wind فيin مَوارِهاits surging المتناوحِwailing
And if she sent me a secret message, I would recognize it
If she'd sent me an inspiration on the wandering wind,
with the wind in its wailing surge.
I'd have known it through the wind's restless sighs.
إذاwhen النّاسُpeople قالواthey say كيفَhow أنتَyou وقدthough already بداhas appeared
ضميرُthe hidden secret الذيthat which بيin me قلتُI say للناسto the people صالحٌwell
When people ask, ‘How are you?’—though now revealed
When people ask how I am with my heart revealed,
is the secret of what ails me—I tell them, ‘Well.’
I say, all that Layla wills in my heart is healing.
وأُغَبطُand I am envied منfrom ليلىLayla بماfor what لاnot أنالُهُI attain it
كلُّall ماthat which قرتْfound contentment بهin it العينُthe eye صالحُgood
And I am envied for what I cannot obtain from Layla;
I envy what I cannot have of Layla -
ah, all that delights the eye is good.
Truly, whatever pleases the eye is healing.
فهلْso will...? تبكينْyou, feminine, weep ليلىLayla لئنِif indeed متُّI die قبلَهاbefore her
وقامَand stood علىover قبريmy grave النساءُthe women الصّوائحُthe wailing ones
So will you weep, Layla, if I die first,
Will you weep for me, O Layla, if I die before you,
and wailing women stand over my grave,
With the keening women wailing over my tomb?
كماjust as لوif أصابَstruck الموتُdeath ليلىLayla بكيتُهاI would weep for her
وجادَand poured abundantly لهاfor her جارٍa flowing stream منof الدمعِtears سافحُpouring forth
as I would weep for her if death struck Layla,
As if death had taken Layla, I would weep for her,
and a flowing stream of tears would pour freely for her?
Generous tears flowing for her, a stream outpoured.
وفتيانِand young men صدقِloyalty قدindeed وصلتُI have joined جَناحهمtheir company
علىupon ظهرِthe surface مُغبرَdust-covered المفاوزِthe deserts نازِحُfar away
And loyal young men—I have joined their company
With the wings of passion I've reached the noble youths
over a remote, dust-covered stretch of wilderness,
Who journey through the dusty desert, marching on.
بمائرةِon a swaying she-camel الضبعَينِboth upper forelegs معقودةِtightly bound النّساthe thigh-sinew

on a she-camel with swinging forelegs and taut thigh-sinews,
They are bound by the love of the two gazelles,
veering aside, her longing the far-stretching barren plain.
Their hearts stampeding wildly through desire.
وماand not ذُكرهُhis remembrance ليلىLayla علىdespite نأيِthe remoteness دارِهاher home
بنجرانَin Najran إلاexcept التُرَّهاتُidle fancies الصحاصحُempty wastes
And his remembrance of Layla, despite her home’s remoteness
In distant Najran, all Layla is recalled by
in Najran, is nothing but empty, barren fancies.
Is the babbling echo rolling through the vales.
