بَكَتْwept أُمُّmother of بِشْرٍBishr أَنْbecause تَبَدَّدَbecame scattered رَهْطُهَاher clan
بَكَتْ أُمُّ بِشْرٍ أَنْ تَبَدَّدَ رَهْطُهَا
وأَنْand because أَصْبَحُواthey became مِنْهُمْamong them شَرِيدٌa fugitive وهَالِكُand one dead
وأَنْ أَصْبَحُوا مِنْهُمْ شَرِيدٌ وهَالِكُ
Umm Bishr wept because her clan had scattered,
The mother of Bishr wept that her people were scattered,
And because some of them had become fugitives, others had perished.
And that some of them had become lost and destroyed.
فَإِنَّfor indeed كِلاَboth حَيَّيْكِyour two tribes مِنْهُمْof them بَقِيَّةٌa remnant
فَإِنَّ كِلاَ حَيَّيْكِ مِنْهُمْ بَقِيَّةٌ
لَوَif only أَنَّthat المَنَايَاdeaths حَالُهَاtheir course مُتَمَاسِكُheld in check
لَوَ أَنَّ المَنَايَا حَالُهَا مُتَمَاسِكُ
For a remnant of both your tribes still survives—
Yet both your clans remain, though diminished,
If only death's course could be held in check.
As if death had not diminished their bonds.

Kilab and Ka'b—their brother does not spend the night
Both dogs and partridges, their brothers night not,
Humiliated, nor do the paths baffle him.
Debased, nor do the roads wear them out.
