The woman of Mazin has a summer dwelling and a spring encampment,

among those witnessed by Ud, then al-Miqrat, then al-Jaraʿ.

Among them, on Jurad's slope, then al-Qabaʾid, in

the open country of Jufaf: nearby pasture and a gathering place.

The heart was bound to an attachment ill-suited to it:

two tribes, one calling for an upland journey and one departing.

A tribe whose settled camps are scattered, yet they are gathered

by the doum palms of al-Iyad and Fathur whenever they seek pasture.

    لَمْ أَدْرِ بَعْدَ غَدَاةِ البَيْنِ مَا صَنَعُوا

    May God not drive far away the companions I left behind;

I never learned what they did after the morning of parting.

They urged departure and said, 'Your watering place

is the distant water of al-Dhinabayn, away from Mawiyya.'

Once they carry us past the valley of al-Nibaj,

those narrow-eyed camels—there is no recovering what has passed.

The woman of Banu Daʾlan stirred your longing among travelling women,

going in bands from these people toward her own kin.

    يَجْرِي بِدِيبَاجَتَيْهِ الرَّشْحُ مُرْتَدِعُ

    A mature camel trots along with her, its elbows turned outward;

sweat streams over both its cheeks, leaving it stained.

calling on Bakr's chiefs and all they have gathered.

Soft-rumped; their garments would pose no difficulty to

heaps of soft sand, and their hips have a limping sway.

Fair-skinned, thirst-parched on summer days, not patient

with humiliation, neither dark-skinned nor craven.

But what do you recall of a cup you drank from,

now that gray hair and baldness have overtaken your head?

    إِنَّ الكَرِيمَ عَلَى عِلاَّتِهِ وَرِعُ

    From the hostess of a noble man who feared violating her trust;

for a noble man, despite his faults, is scrupulous.

Dark-eyed and fair—we do not know whether she will yield to us

after playful banter, or refuse and hold herself aloof.

If she offered us a mere sniff of her greeting,

like the sniff of a water-shunning camel, the riders would leave content.

    never addressed without being abashed.

She gazes with the eyes of a sand oryx, drawn apart

by a tender, soft-hoofed calf, frail except in its leg bones.

its pasterns and dewclaws have not yet grown firm.

Smooth of hide and delicate-nostrilled, when

it sniffs the resting grounds—its pasterns slender.

A nursling, never fitted with a weaning peg by herdsmen, nor

restrained at Hawmal, timid at the farthest edge of its herd,

except by an oryx: when it rouses her, she turns toward it,

as a skilled craftsman curves a bracelet for an adorned woman.

    ثُمَّتْ يُخَالِفُهَا طَوْراً فَيَضْطَجِعُ

    It walks beside her a while, and she urges it on;

then at times it turns away from her and lies down.

She spends the day watching it at the dunes of al-Hurrayn,

fearing for it whenever the beast of prey hangs back.

O daughter of the house of Shihab, do you know, when

the nursing dams reach evening with bowed necks,

that I complete my company of lot-players with a curved bow,

from a shayhat branch, smooth-surfaced and stripped bare?

Men with tousled forelocks urge their companies onward,

fair-faced, masters of the morning game, reckless,

toward fulfilling their pledges; their lot-arrows pay them their due,

so a lot-won portion of meat is always theirs.

And a pot is always bubbling noisily for them,

like an ostrich chick, its first helpings rump cuts and hump-tops.

O daughter of the house of Shihab, do you know, when

the herd's young camel fears the burden of indemnity,

that we undertake our greatest burdens, and it is borne

by one of us, long of sword-baldric, equal to the task,

ample in reserve when trouble comes upon him by night,

like a sword with neither notch nor rust?

We keep our camel herds in reserve until through them we remove

the indemnity from ourselves—neither black-faced nor weak.

O sister of the house of Shihab, do you know, when

terror makes freeborn women forget their clothing,

that we fasten his coat of mail upon the tall warrior,

while the horses stare wide-eyed and hold back?

And do you know, when gazelles seek shelter, and

the mirage keeps racing over its sand ridges,

that I stir up the sea of noonday heat, while the chameleon

lashes its tail atop the tree's branches,

on a huge, mature, calf-losing she-camel, whose rivals

are mature mounts when the girths bind them tight,

each a sturdy young she-camel that has only just matured,

whose milk neither herdsman nor spring-born calf has sought?
