Stop, you two, at my family's dwelling, and question it.

Yet how can the worn remains of dwellings be questioned?

Effaced ruins between Armam and Ghubr,

Like remnants of writing in a barren land.

Gazelles of Aram roam over it,

As fair women wheeled around al-Diwar.

The daughters of a knock-kneed, small-headed ostrich watch over it,

His voice low, save for the ostrich-call.

He gathered his eggs on the dune of Rumah,

To himself, parched and faint in the summer heat.

Know that the worst of the eye's afflictions

Is surely a longing that returned to me behind al-Sitar,

And the longest of them, when Orion's

Trailing stars were nearing their setting.

As though Orion's stars were newly calved she-camels,

Turned back tenderly, bending over a calf,

Lame, unable to follow them until

The time comes for him to catch up, after waiting.

And neither of the two days of Jadud I faced

Was like the day the clan of Banu Dithar set out in earnest.

Mighty honor departed the morning they left,

And left behind, in the encampment, my pride,

And my fellow gamblers, when the tribe pitched

Their tents on bare land where growth was scant.

    Taybah's camel-litters departed without farewell,

Yet farewells to them are best while they are still settled.

And they fulfilled their pledges, like the return of

Borrowed gear by the one it was lent to.

And from her, at Burqat al-Amhar, there shone

Before your eyes a distant gleam of firelight.

Whenever I said that sticks had made it blaze—

Sticks of rand, and the gales blowing by night—

For a yearning man whom the blaze buffets,

Like the Magians' fire in wind-tossed reed-beds.

They rode into darkness on Fayd's stony ridge,

Shining through their night until the day.

They left the heights of al-Warka behind,

    West of al-Qa'aqi', then al-Sitar.

And they seemed like the gazelles of Tarj,

With the poles showing above their necks,

    Upon enduring, smooth-necked mounts,

    Nobly marked, of unmistakable stock.

I say, now they have climbed toward Qarn Zaby:

“In what downhill contest do you vie?”

For I am not as he says, even if

My dwelling does not adjoin yours in Damascus.
