رِعَاثٌdangling earrings وبَرَّاقٌand something gleaming مِنَof اللَّوْنِthe complexion وَاضِحُclear
She captivated me with an oryx calf's eyes, adorned
Her two languid eyes have captivated me,
by dangling earrings and a bright, clear complexion.
Brimful with coquetry, clearly manifest.
فَلاَso neither طُولُthe length of ماthe time that جَاوَرْتُI lived beside دَهْمَاءَDahma نَافِعٌhelpful
ولاَnor دَاءُthe sickness of مَاthe fact that كُلِّفْتُI was smitten with دَهْمَاءَDahma بَارِحُdeparting
So neither my long stay beside Dahma avails me,
Of no avail is the lengthy stay with her tribe,
nor does the sickness of my passion for Dahma depart.
Nor the malady with which she has tasked me.
أَبِيتُI spend the night كَأَنِّيas though I كُلَّevery آخِرِend of لَيْلَةٍa night
مِنَfrom الرُّحَضَاءِfever-sweat آخِرَthe end of اللَّيْلِthe night مَائِحُa water-scooper in a well
I pass the night as though, at the close of every night,
I stay awake as if each last night
from fever-sweat, I were a water-scooper in a well at night's end.
Of the meadows were my final eve.
فَلاَso not وأَبِيby the father of دَهْمَاءَDahma زَالَتْshe ceased to be عَزِيزَةًdear
عَلَىto قَوْمِهَاher people مَاas long as فَتَلَtwirled الزَّنْدَthe fire-stick قَادِحُa fire-kindler
So, by Dahma's father, she shall never cease to be dear
No, by Dahma's life, she did not lose her priceless status
to her people, as long as a fire-kindler twirls the fire-stick.
Among her people, though the flint kindles the spark.
فَإِنْso if سَأَلَتْshe asks عَنِّيabout me سُلَيْمَىSulayma فَقُلْthen tell لَهَاto her
بِهِin him غُبَّرٌlingering traces مِنْof دَائِهِhis illness وهْوَand he صَالِحُwell
So if Sulayma asks about me, then tell her:
So if Sulayma asks about me, then say to her:
He has lingering traces of his illness, but he is well.
On him is a stain from his sickness, but he is well.
