أَأَخْطَلُO Akhtal لِمْwhy ذَكَرْتَyou mentioned نِسَاءَthe women of قَيْسٍQays
فمَاso not رُوِّعْنَthey were frightened مِنْكَby you ولاnor سُبِينَاthey were taken captive
O Akhtal, why did you mention the women of Qays?
Why, Akhtal, did you mention the women of Qais?
They were neither frightened by you nor taken captive.
They were not frightened by you, nor taken captive.
ذَواَتِwomen possessing البَأْوِpride مِنْfrom ذُبْيَانَDhubyan عَنْكُمْaloof from you
قَضَىdecreed القَاضيthe judge لَهَاfor them أَنْthat لاَnot تَهُونَاthey be dishonored
The proud women of Dhubyan, aloof from you—
The she-camels turned away from you to Dhubyan,
The judge decreed that they should not be dishonored.
The judge has ruled that they should not be slighted.
ونِسْوَةُand the women of عَامِرٍAmir وبَنِيand the sons of سُلَيْمٍSulaym
وأعْصُرَand A'sur مَاnot سُلِينَthey were carried off ولاَnor خَزينَاthey were disgraced
And the women of Amir and Banu Sulaym,
And the women of 'Amir and the clan of Sulaym,
And A'sur, were neither carried off nor disgraced.
And the ripest fruits that were not squeezed nor picked unripe,
حَمَىguarded أَبْضَاعَهَاtheir private parts الشُّمُّthe proud الغَيَارَىthe fiercely jealous
رَدَوْاthey charged مِنْfrom دُونِهَاbefore them بِالدَّارعِينَاwith mail-clad warriors
Their chastity was guarded by proud, fiercely jealous men,
Their chastity was protected by jealous men,
Who charged forth in their defense with mail-clad warriors,
Who repelled all enemies with their coats of mail.
بِكُلِّon every أَشَقَّlong-bodied steed مَقْصُوصِclipped الذُّنَابَىthe tail
بِشَكِّيَّاتِby the weapons of فَارِسَPersia قَدْalready شُجِينَاthey were wounded
On every long-bodied steed with a clipped tail,
With every long-necked, short-tailed, bay stallion,
Already wounded by Persian weapons.
Ridden by heroic, seasoned horsemen,
صَبَحْنَاwe attacked at dawn تَغْلِبَTaghlib اللُّؤْمِbaseness السَّرَايَاthe raiding bands
تَمَطَّىthey stretch out بِالْكُمَاةِwith armored champions وتَنْطَوِينَاand they draw together
We assailed base Taghlib at dawn with raiding bands,
We attacked at dawn, raiding their camps,
Stretching out with armored champions and drawing together.
Wrapping ourselves in spears as they awoke.
صَبَحْنَاهُمْwe attacked them at dawn مُسَوَّمَةًmarked steeds رِعَالاًin troops
سُقِينَthey were watered بِمَاءِwith the water of حَرْبٍwar واقْتُلِينَاand were driven hard
We attacked them at dawn with marked steeds, troop on troop,
We left them in the morning, marked as cattle,
Watered with war's water and driven hard.
Given to drink the water of war, and slaughtered.
نُقَدِّمُهَاwe drive them forward إِذَاwhen نَكَصَتْthey recoil عَلَيْهِمْagainst them
ونَحْذُوهَاand we shoe them السَّرِيحَleather hoof-wraps إِذَاwhen وَجِينَاthey become hoofsore
We drive them against the foe whenever they recoil,
We pursue them when they retreat from us,
And shoe them with leather when their hooves grow sore.
And chase them with the horses when they flee.
ونَحْنُand we القائِدُونَthose who lead بِوَارِدَاتٍat Waridat
ضَبَابَthe mists of المَوْتِdeath حَتىuntil يَنْجَلِينَاthey clear
And at Waridat we were the ones who drove
We are the leaders attacking with raiding parties,
The mists of death until they cleared.
Piercing the fog of death until it clears away.
كَأَنَّas though الخَيْلَthe horses قَدalready صَبَّحْنَthey attacked at dawn كَلْباًKalb
يَرَيْنَthey see وَرَاءَهُمْbeyond them مَاwhat يَبْتَغِينَاthey seek
As though the horses, having struck Kalb at dawn,
As if the horses had been unleashed like hounds at dawn
Saw beyond them what they sought.
To see behind the enemy what they sought,
سَخِطْنَthey were enraged فَلاَso not يَرَيْنَهُمُthey deem them بَوَاءًequal recompense
ولاَand not يَنْزِعْنَthey desist حَتَّىuntil يَغْتَدِينَاthey take their morning meal
Enraged, they did not deem them equal recompense,
They raged, not resting until their thirst was quenched
Nor would they desist until they took their morning meal.
And their hunger for vengeance finally satisfied.
ولوْand even if كَحِلَتْwere darkened with kohl حَوَاجِبُthe brows of خَيْلِthe horses of قَيْسٍQays
بِكَلْبٍwith Kalb بَعْدَafter تَغْلِبَTaghlib مَاnot قذِينَاour eyes stung
And even if the brows of Qays's horses were kohled
And if the horses of Qais had been marked
With Kalb after Taghlib, our eyes would not sting.
With dogs after defeating them, we would not care.
فَمَاso not تَسْلَمْyield لَكُمْto you أَفْرَاسُthe horses of قيْسٍQays
فَلاَso do not تَرجُواhope for البَنَاتِthe daughters ولاَnor البَنِينَاthe sons
Qays's horses will not yield to you,
So the steeds of Qais will not be safe from you,
So hope for neither the daughters nor the sons.
You will not spare their daughters or their sons.
أَثَرْنَthey raised عَجَاجَةًa dust cloud فيat دَيْرِthe monastery of لُبَّىLubba
وفيand at الحَضْرَيْنِal-Hadrayn شَيَّبْنَthey turned gray القُرُونَاthe locks of hair
They raised a cloud of dust at the monastery of Lubba,
They left tracks like an old crow in the monastery of Lubba,
And at al-Hadrayn they turned locks of hair gray.
And in Hadhrain they made the bells chime.
إِذَاwhen وَطِئَتْtrod upon سَنَابِكُهُنَّtheir hooves عَبْداًa slave
زُهَيْريّاًa Zuhayri سَمِعْتَyou heard لَهُfrom him أَنِينَاgroaning
When their hooves trod upon a slave,
When their hooves trampled a Zuhairite slave,
A Zuhayri, you heard his groaning.
You could hear his moaning.
لَقَدْindeed لاَقَتْmet رَحَىthe millstone of كلْبKalb صَبَاحاًat dawn
رَحَىthe millstone of لُقْمَانَLuqman تَلْتَهِمُdevouring الطَّحِينَاthe flour
Indeed, Kalb's millstone met at dawn
They met the grindstone of Kulayb one morning,
Luqman's millstone, devouring the flour.
The grindstone of Luqman that grinds the flour.
شَرِبْنَاwe drank مِنْof دِمَاءِthe blood of بَنِيthe sons of حَبِيبٍHabib
ولَوْلاَand were it not for البَأْوُpride عَنْهُمْaloof from them قَدْindeed رَوِينَاwe drank our fill
We drank of the blood of Banu Habib,
We drank from the blood of the clan of Habib,
And but for our disdain of them, we would have drunk our fill.
And were it not for the distance, we would have had our fill.
بَقَرْنَاwe ripped open مِنْهُمُof theirs أَلْفَيْtwo thousand بَعِيرٍcamels
فَلَمْso not نَتْرُكْwe left لِحَامِلَةٍfor a pregnant female جَنِينَاa fetus
We ripped open two thousand of their camels,
We raided a thousand of their camels,
So we left no pregnant female with her unborn young.
Not leaving a single pregnant female.
