أَشِيرَاyou two, advise بِرَأْيٍwith counsel مِنْكُمَاfrom you both اليَوْمَtoday يَنْفَعُwill help
My two friends, passion has scattered my judgment.
My friend, desire has confused sound judgment;
Offer me counsel from you both today that will help.
Give me advice today, may it be useful.
أَأَهْجُرُshall I forsake? لَيْلىLayla بَعْدَafter طُولِa long duration of صَبَابَةٍardent yearning
أَمَor اصْرِمُshall I sever حَبْلَthe cord of الوصْلِunion مِنْهَاfrom her فَأَقْطَعُand so cut it off
Shall I forsake Layla after long, ardent yearning?
Shall I abandon Layla after long passion?
Or shall I sever the cord of union with her, and so cut it off?
Or sever the bond, cutting it off?
أَمَor ارْضَىshall I be content بِمَاwith what قَدْindeed كُنْتُI used to أَسْخَطُresent مَرَّةًonce
أَمَor اشْرَبُshall I drink رَنْقَthe turbidity of العَيْشِlife أَمْor كَيْفَhow أَصْنَعُshall I act
Or shall I be content with what I once resented?
Shall I be content with what I had once deplored?
Or shall I drink life's turbid waters—or what am I to do?
Or shall I drink the bile of life? What shall I do?
