وحَيّاً بِهَبُّودٍ جَزَى اللهُ أَسْعَدَا
May God reward Saʿd at al-Abāriq with a blessing,
May Allah reward Sa'd with Abariq a blessing,
And a clan at Habbūd—may God reward Asʿad,
And Habbud alive with the most fortunate.
وَحَيّاًand a clan عَلَىat تِبْرَاكَTibrāk لَمْnot أَرعI care for مِثْلَهُمْas they do

أَخاً قطِعَتْ مِنْهُ الحَبَائِلُ مُفْرَدَا
And a clan at Tibrāk: I have never cared as they did
And alive upon Tibrak, I have not seen the likes of them,
For a brother whose ties were severed, left alone.
A brother whose ropes have been severed, singled out.

عَلَى ظَهْرِ عَجْعَاجِ العَشِيَّاتِ أَجْرَدَا
I wept through the two ends of a worn waterskin the day they departed,
I cried over the loss of companions on the day they left
On the back of a sleek beast that roars in the evenings.
On the back of a bare mountain road.
أَخَبَّاthe two ran وقَدْwhile already كَانَhad been المَزَادُthe waterskins سِوَاهُمَاother than those two

عَلَى شُعَبٍ مِنْ صَادِرٍ قَدْ تَبَدَّدَا
Both ran freely, while the other waterskins
They went away while the only choice was them
Had already scattered along branching ravines of Ṣādir.
On the paths of a mountain range that scattered.
