أَحَقّاًIs it truly so? أَتَانِيreached me أَنَّthat عَوْفَʿAwf بْنَson of مَالِكٍMālik
بِبَطْنِin the valley of رَمَىRamā يُهْدِيsends as a gift إليَّto me القَوَافِيَاthe rhymes
Is the report I have received true—that ʿAwf ibn Mālik
Is it true that Auf bin Malik
in the valley of Ramā is sending me rhymes?
With his stomach coming forth, sends me poetry?
أَبَانُواthey drove away أَخاهُمْtheir brother إذْwhen أَرَادُواthey wanted زِيَالهُhis departure
بِأَسْوَاطِwith whips of قِدٍّrawhide عَاقِدِينَtying النَّوَاصِيَاthe forelocks
They drove their brother away when they wished him gone,
They showed their brotherhood when they wanted to humiliate him
with rawhide whips, tying the forelocks.
With leather whips, grabbing him by the forelock.
فَأَجْمَعُso I gather أَجْلاساًstout camels شِدَاداًstrong يَسُوقُهَاdrives them
إلَيَّto me إذَاwhen رَاحَreturned at evening الرِّعَاءُthe herdsmen رِعائِيَاmy herdsmen
So I gather stout, strong camels, driven
So I gather a group, violent, driving them
to me by my herdsmen when the herdsmen return at evening.
To me when the shepherds lead their flocks.
