فَكَيْفَso how لَنَاfor us بِالشرْبِwith drinking إِنْif لَمْnot تَكُنْthere be لَنَاfor us

دَرَاهِمُ عِنْدَ الحَانَوِيِّ ولاَ نَقْدُ
How, then, can we drink if we have no
So without wine how can we drink
dirhams with the tavern-keeper, nor ready cash?
If we've no silver with the tavern-keeper, no cash?
أَنَدَّانُshall we incur debt? أَمْor نَعْتَانُwe buy on credit أَمْor يَنْبَرِيsteps forward لَنَاfor us
أَنَدَّانُ أَمْ نَعْتَانُ أَمْ يَنْبَرِي لَنَا
أَغَرُّa radiant man كَنَصْلِlike the blade of السَّيْفِthe sword أَبْرَزَهُbrought it forth الغِمْدُthe sheath
أَغَرُّ كَنَصْلِ السَّيْفِ أَبْرَزَهُ الغِمْدُ
Shall we incur debt, or buy on credit, or will there step forward for us
Shall we pawn clothes, or sell a book, or shall some hot-head
a radiant man, like a sword-blade revealed by its sheath?
Draw his sword for our sake—that daring blade?
