Kubaysha's campsite lies far aside at Manjal,

and the wind swept over it, sweep after sweep:

a Yemeni wind, whose loans the north wind repays

in varied gusts; from it rose, through noon into evening,

    فَشَمَّرَ جَارِيهِ عَلَيْهِ وأَسْبَلاَ

    a dust-cloud whose face the summer summoned forth;

it gathered its flowing skirts above the site, then let them trail.

As though within it, made of tattered cotton,

were a sieve for every current of the wind.

So load your heart's anguish on a she-camel with strength in reserve,

when the waste shimmers before the noble pale camels,

one of those that follow a gallop with a swift, close-paced walk,

when her doubled girths leave slack beyond the saddle.

She was kneeled at the tent door until she was untethered,

then set out with the riders, their gear now unfastened.

By evening she was at the outskirts of al-Mirakh, forestalling

the sun's brow at Buraym before it could dismount.

She set out like a proudly displaying stud-camel that, going forth,

reared up, drew back from a spearpoint, then trotted on,

with a head that, when the bit tightens on his run,

he tucks low, then relaxes and moves like a mule.

When camels wrapped in coarse haircloth met her,

she made them drink a cup of deadly poison and venom.

When she faced the road, she aimed for

its hard stretches, too proud to take the easy ground.

I check her spiteful temper, and it is as though

my hand, against her headlong rush, were parrying a pickaxe.

As though a she-demon possessed her, so swift is she,

when at dawn she surges forward, fleet in her gait.

When dark, murky night beds down where she does,

she lays down wing and breast upon rugged ground.

Made to kneel, she sank upon bent, lean legs,

and I pillowed my head on a cloak worn sieve-thin.

Then she passed Hirr's low hills one evening,

her two massive footpads still uncracked.

At dawn she was like an ʿIbadi with half-shaven head,

when he walks, swaying his side and strutting proudly.

She strides at ease in the halter, as there sped away

a lone, black-limbed ostrich on Hawmal's hard uplands.

As though her saddle ropes had been slung across

the back of a gleaming white bull, dark-faced and kohl-eyed.

His two horns knock down, in every lush hollow

of sand, tall leeks and squill.

Is it that, or a dark ass whose braying returns

from the strength of his two neck-sinews, when he cries hoarsely,

a four-toothed male, as though a bell were in his throat,

ringing whenever yearning visits him at night?

He won a dusky mate for himself, excluding the other stallions,

    a restless one, racing a white-bellied, loud-braying male.

The two sniff out herbage on al-Hunayy's level plain,

where autumn's month brought steady rain and flowing floods.

    أَحِفَّ عَلَيْهِ بَطْنُهَا فَتَرَهَّلاَ

    She kept a tadpole hidden within her for six months;

her belly grew bare over it, then sagged.
