Al-Hulayfah is indeed a watering place I will not approach,
Al-Hulayfa is water I am not its raft
despite the praise I was told it receives.
Along with the praise that I was told comes to it
لاَmay not لَيَّنَsoften اللهُGod لِلْمَعْرُوفِtoward kindness حَاضِرَهَاits settled folk
ولاَand may not يَزَلْcease مُغْلِساًtraveling in predawn darkness مَاas long as عَاشَlives بَادِيهَاits nomadic folk
May God never soften its settled folk toward kindness,
Neither has God made its present easy for favors
and may its nomads keep traveling in predawn darkness as long as they live.
Nor will it cease being turbid as long as its herders live

For many a valiant man coming to drink have we trampled there,
So how many valiant heroes have we trod it with
and many captives have we taken as spoils, exchanging them for ransom,
And how much booty have we taken, challenging for it

When the horses returned it galloping with lowered heads
the spearheads’ edges, sharpened along their sides.
To the points of the lances dripping its sides
