I brought the horses from the environs of Sarj

to the people of al-Hawajiz and al-Kathib,

with every tall, shapely, highbred steed,

slim-waisted and long-legged beside the led horse.

Upon them rode every wide-legged, vigorous man,

stout of heart on the day of hardship.

I raided Hanifa with them at dawn, their eyes narrow,

as though their mass were clouds swept by the south wind.

So their glimpse of them lasted scarcely a 'no, no,'

and they were lost, either slain or stripped.

So by morning the beasts of prey were dragging flesh,

    fresh, from warrior or nobleman.

And I made an example of the young man of the house of Qurt,

and he was a man of battles and drinking bouts.
