What ails me, that I see longing kneeling in her lands,

while the heart sails in rapture along her shores?

A beauty! O poetry, gently—do not blow upon her

unchecked, for the winds of passion drive her far away.

How often time's calamities surprised her with hardship,

and the ages have a share in her radiance.

Bahrain, O destination of travelers from afar,

and for those nearby, her dear one is content of eye.

Time refuses humiliation in her homelands,

and the citizen has stature to match hers.

Time passed, and epochs folded away

among the ages, while glory endured to tell her tale.

Men gained dignity in her abodes,

and noble women draw kohl from the corners of her eyes.

Bahrain, O pearl of homelands, on our lips

a melody of poetry sings throughout her reaches.

O you of easy living, O sweet one, captivating

the eye of hearts—we ransom her with our souls.

O nest of love, in union and in separation,

where is escape, while my soul drinks its fill in her?

O lote-tree of fertility, O sea that enchanted me,

is there respite for the yearning one within her reaches?

    رَيَّانةُ الفَـرعِ وَرقـاءٌ حَـواشيهــا

    Her incense burners waft the fragrance of aloeswood;

her branches are well watered, her fringes leafy.

Slender of stem in palms and in fruit,

her fare is delicious, her offerings fresh ripe dates.

her rhymes are arranged like meter in poetry.

Gracious, her forelocks gleamed like a flash of lightning,

and, a spring of generosity, her channels overflow.

O gracious of spirit, O hidden pearl,

humankind has become an oyster shell around her treasure.

The seas scatter treasures in their depths,

and ships creep across their surface.

The ships busily traversed the waters of the sea,

what have I to do with you? Then behold the beauty within her.

Indeed, when a land's tributaries are beautiful,

it conquers hearts and dispels doubt and bewilderment.

The land, through her people, wherever their renown spreads:

her standing rises of its own accord and lifts her higher.

O you who shun the dwelling, turn aside into her lands.

or soar through the outskirts of Muharraq?

You are the comforting companion when someone arrives downcast

from sorrow, which you ease and dispel.

    فَوقَ الجمار كصَبٍّ يـكـتوي فيهـا

    مُـرٌّ جَـفـاكِ ولُـقْيــاكِ يُصافــيــهـا

    You are serenity and the soul's tempest together;

bitter is your estrangement, and meeting you makes peace with the soul.
