    The taste of poems has turned bitter as colocynth.

    The color of verse has truly grown dark.

    He was dignified and a man of wisdom,

    And you would see him inspired in every matter.

    مَا خَانَهُ التَّوْفِيْقُ فِيْمَا أَبْرَمَا

    He was always guided aright in his judgment;

    Success never betrayed him in what he decided.

    He weighed his words with insight and composure,

    And everyone listened whenever he spoke.

    He kept close ties with his family and neighbors,

    And with everyone who passed by or offered greetings.

    And he beamed at everyone, so you would never

    Meet him except when he was laughing and smiling.

    قَدْ كَانَ لِلضِّيْفَانِ دَوْمَاً مُكْرِمَا

    If you visited him, you found the fullest welcome;

    He always honored his guests.

    And his steed strode freely toward good,

    While his steed toward evil was kept bridled.

    لاَ .. لَيْسَ يُوْجَدُ مِثْلُهُ .. أَوْ قَلَّمَا

    He was a refuge for all who sought help;

    No—his like is not to be found, or only rarely.

    And you saw him above all pettiness,

    And enamored of every kind of virtue.

    قَدْ كَانَ عِنْدَ المُعْضِلاتِ الأَحْزَمَا

    He was an excellent counselor and adviser;

    He was the most resolute when faced with difficulties.

    He was an excellent neighbor; I testify that he

    Was indeed foremost in good deeds.

    He kept his anger in check and controlled himself,

    And for every wound, he was truly a balm.

    He strove to bring people together; indeed, his heart

    Was free of every grudge.

    He strove for reconciliation throughout his life,

    And his heart was the most upright path.

    He made for God's house at every obligatory prayer,

    So you would always see him prostrating or standing.

    He followed the guidance of the Chosen One,

    And was enthralled by love for the Prophet's Household.

    In the best of months—nay, on the finest night—

    He had completed the prescribed prayers that night.

    He prayed Tarawih; his heart found rest.

    He was surrendering the trust of the Most Merciful.

    كُلٌّ لِمَوْتِكَ يَا حَبِيْبُ تَأَلَّمَا

    The hearts of the whole island weep for you;

    Everyone grieved at your death, O beloved.

    Who will lead the people in prayer after your departure?

    Who will call to prayer, singing and chanting melodiously?

    فَرَحِيْلُكُمْ قَدْ كَانَ هَوْلاً صَادِمَا

    You left us, and our eyes wept blood;

    For your departure was a shocking calamity.

    You will remain alive in hearts for all time.

    All my life, I will keep praying and pleading for mercy.

    O my Lord, exalt his station in the Gardens,

    And make him a constant companion of the Guide, the Bearer of Good Tidings.

    And grant him, O Lord, the sight of Your face,

    And let him enjoy bliss with You in the Gardens.

    You are the refuge, and You—You are our hope.

    We beseech You, O Lord: have mercy on Qasim.
