Their hearts like solid stone.

They came to the Chosen One's uncle and dear one,
And spoke with harshness and coldness.

They said to him, “Your brother's son has divided us;
Indeed, he has disparaged the religion of our people and forefathers.

He goes on saying that revelation comes to him,
Though he is like the rest of the poets.

And dignity: “O most merciful of fathers,

Do not protect him; leave him without shelter.”

They bargained with him to surrender his beloved;
They offered this proposal without shame.

The Chosen One's uncle and dear one says,
“Oh, how vile the proposal they foolishly offered him!
بِئْسَتْvile are فِعَالِكمُوyour deeds وبِئْسَand vile is مَقَالُكُمْyour speech

The Chosen One's uncle and supporter dies;
O Death, why did you not come more slowly?
والزَّوْجُand the wife فَارَقَتِdeparted الحَيَاةَlife لرَبِّهَاfor her Lord

And your wife left life to go to her Lord;
So you remained, weeping for her with the most burning tears.
وظَلَلْتَand you continued تَذْكُرهَاremembering her بِخَيْرٍfavorably دَائِمَاًalways

And you continued always to speak well of her,
Granting her the finest fidelity throughout your life.
وقَضَيْتَand you spent عَامَthe year of الحُزْنِsorrow بَعْدَafter وفَاتِهِمْtheir deaths

You spent the Year of Sorrow after their deaths,
And behold, life had become devoid of light.

And behold, the people of unbelief increased their plots,
And devised ever more ways of scheming and harm.

هَذاthis is (بِلالُBilal) قَدْindeed ابتُليْwas afflicted بـby(أمَيَّةٍUmayya)

قَدْindeed عَاشَhe lived مِنْهُat his hands العُمْرَhis life فيin بَلْوَاءِaffliction
Here is Bilal, afflicted by Umayya;
He lived his life in torment at his hands.
يَأْتيhe brings بِصَخْرٍa rock فَوْقَupon صَدْرٍa chest طَاهِرٍpure
ويَجُرَّهُand drags him جَرَّاًdragging علىacross الرَّمْضَاءِthe scorching ground
He brings a rock upon a pure chest,
And drags him across the scorching ground.
وإذَاand when العَذَابُthe torment اشْتَدَّintensified زَادَhe grew صَلابَةًsteadfast
(أَحَدٌOne) يقولُsays (بِلالُBilal) للأَعْدَاءِto the enemies
As the torment worsens, he grows more steadfast;
“One!” Bilal says to his enemies.
(أَحَدٌOne.. أَحَدْOne) هذاthis نَشِيدٌa chant خَالِدٌimmortal
قَدْindeed هَزَّshook أَرْضِيmy earth بَلْindeed وَهَزَّand shook سَمَائِيmy sky
“One! One!” This is an immortal chant,
Which shook my earth—indeed, shook my sky.
وأرَىand I see (صُهَيْبَSuhayb) الآَنَnow يَبْغِيseeking هِجْرَةًemigration

لَكِنَّهُمْbut they وَقَفواstood لَهُagainst him بِجَفَاءِwith harshness
And now I see Suhayb seeking to emigrate,
But they stood against him with harshness.
قَدْindeed كُنْتَyou were صُعْلوكَاًa pauper فَقِيْرَاًpoor مُعْدَمَاًdestitute

“You were a pauper, poor and destitute;
No, you shall not pass with these possessions.”
وهُنَاand here يَقولُsays (صُهَيبُSuhayb) قوْلَةthe words of َوَاثِقٍa confident man

أنَاI أفْتَدِىransom دِينِيmy religion ولَوْeven if بِدِمَائِيwith my blood
Here Suhayb speaks with a confident man's words:
“I ransom my religion, even with my blood.
أنَاI لَنْnever أعودَshall return مَدَىthroughout الحَيَاةِlife إليكُمُوto you
لَوْeven if أنَّكُمْyou مَزقتُمُوtear apart أشْلائيmy limbs
I shall never return to you as long as I live,
Even if you tear my limbs to pieces.”
أبْشِرْrejoice (أبَاAbu يَحْيَىYahya) بِبَيْعٍin a bargain رَابِحٍprofitable

“Rejoice, Abu Yahya, in a profitable bargain!
Rejoice, for with God is the finest reward.”

Likewise, Ammar ibn Yasir was like them,
And likewise Sumayya, the first of the martyrs,
وأبُوهُand his father (يَاسِرُYasir) تِلْكَthat عَائِلَةfamily ٌ غَدَتْbecame

And his father Yasir: that family rose
Beyond words and beyond all praise.

“Be patient,” you tell Yasir's family, “and be rewarded;
Tomorrow we meet in a spacious Paradise.”
ويقولُand says (عَمَّارُAmmar بنُson of ياسِرَYasir) سَيِّدِيmy master

Ammar ibn Yasir says, “My master,
I now live in darkness.

To ward off my ordeal and affliction.

You emigrated to ease the burden on the weak.

His steps went astray, and he wandered in the wilderness.

Who would foolishly challenge his caravan?”

With evil intent; that is the conduct of fools.
