    How often I dived into the sea of poetry to choose

    Pearls for praising the Chosen One that would please him.

    And the pearls seem to me to laugh, saying:

    How could one like me praise the one we love?

    For God raised his rank above all creation,

    And God endowed him with exalted character.

    Poetry—all poetry—kneels before the one whom

    The Lord of creation adorned with His attributes.

    جَلَّ الكِتَابُ وجَلَّ مَنْ أوْحَاهُ

    And upon him our Lord sent down His Qur'an;

    Exalted is the Book, and exalted is He who revealed it.

    في شَخْصِ خَيْرِ العَالمينَ نَرَاهُ

    In Surah Al-A'raf there is a guiding law for us;

    We see it in the person of the best of all beings.

    أعرِضْ عَنِ الجُهَلاءِ تَلْقَ رِضَاهُ

    Accept your Lord's pardon and surely enjoin His goodness;

    Turn away from the ignorant, and attain His pleasure.

    In At-Tawbah, my friend, read the last verse,

    And look at what God has given him.

    For he is the Compassionate, he is the Merciful, and our Lord

    Has named him with two of His own names.

    فَلَعَمْرُكُمْ هُمْ يَعْمَهُونَ وتَاهوا

    In Al-Hijr our Lord swears by his life:

    So by your lives, they wander blindly and have gone astray.

  11. في«الكَهْفِ»و«الشُّعَرا»{لَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ}

    نَزَلَتْ لتَخْفيفِ الذي تَلْقَاهُ

    In Al-Kahf and Ash-Shu'ara, “Perhaps you are wasting away with grief”

    Was revealed to ease what you endure.

    Ease your burden: you cannot guide whomever you wish.

    Had your Lord willed, they would have followed His guidance.

    In Al-Fath our Lord forgives what came before,

    And even what came after—exalted is He on high—

    وتَمَامُ نِعْمَتُهُ عليهِ رِضَاهُ

    To complete His favor upon the best of creation;

    And the completion of His favor upon him is His pleasure.

    In “Nun and the Pen,” God honors him,

    And has raised him to greatness of character.

    Thus Muhammad attained all the noble virtues:

    An honor the Lord of creation bestowed upon him.

    اللهُ يَرْفَعُ دائِمَاً ذِكْرَاهُ

    God, Lord of the Throne, expands his breast;

    God forever elevates his remembrance.

    And the Generous Lord admonishes His beloved,

    Having favored him with His pardon before the admonition.

    From Makkah, the city of guidance, he was borne on a night journey

    By the Lord of creation, at night, to His Al-Aqsa.

    سُبْحَانَ مَنْ بالفَضْلِ قَدْ أولاهُ

    And there he was the leader of all the prophets;

    Glory to Him who granted him favor!

    واسْمَعْ إلى «جبريلَ» قَدْ ناجَاهُ

    Then, after that, he ascended to the Utmost Boundary;

    And listen to Gabriel, who spoke privately to him:

    مَا كَانَ ذَاكَ لِغَيْرِكُمْ حَاشَاهُ

    “Venture alone into the seas of light, my master;

    That was not for anyone but you—far be it from Him!

    لكِنَّ قَدْرَكَ أنْتَ مَا أعَلاهُ

    If I advance, I am burned by His light;

    But your own rank—how lofty it is!

    لا يَسْتَطِيْعُ تَجَاوزَاً لمدَاهُ

    Each one of us has a station, my master;

    He cannot go beyond its bounds.”

    And the Almighty Lord addresses His beloved,

    And has called him by the noblest of names:

    “I have unveiled all the worlds to you,

    And likewise My face—you now see it.

    I have created no one dearer than you, Muhammad,

    And I shall surely give you what pleases you.”

    This is a station whose essence none knows

    But He who granted it to His beloved.

    How strange that one with two eyes sees Ahmad,

    Yet his eyes turn away from the light of guidance!

    How strange that one heard the beloved Muhammad

    One day, yet did not reach the heavens through his guidance!

    How strange this unbelief that harmed our beloved!

    How strange that it drove him away from his home!

    How strange Makkah—how its men grew impatient

    With our beloved, while the cave sheltered him!

    How wondrous this deaf stone: when there appears

    Beside it the best of creation, it greets him!

    How wondrous the stones that glorify their Lord

    In his palm—may God bless him!

    مِنْ أجْلِ ذَاكَ تَفَطَّرَتْ قَدَمَاهُ

    And at night he stands before Almighty God;

    For that, his feet became cracked.

    And a full moon split in the sky for our beloved,

    Until it appeared as two halves on high.

    And I see the clouds love him and shade him,

    On whatever handspan in this world they meet him.

    فحبيبُنَا واللهِ مَا أَحيَاهُ

    The trees of the wilderness draw together to conceal him;

    For, by God, how modest our beloved is!

    And the ewe's udder gives milk in his honor,

    Yet I see factions of his own people reject him.

    And the best of all beings says to his companions,

    In a scene—who, I wonder, could forget it?—

    “If I ever flogged a brother of ours,

    Let him take retribution from me, for I accept that.”

    Our beloved offers retribution against himself:

    A unique justice, with none like it.

    فالبَحْرُ غَيْضٌ مِنْ نَدَى يُمْنَاهُ

    He gives and gives—his bounty cannot be fathomed;

    For the sea is but a trickle of his right hand's bounty.

    هَوَ واثِقٌ في اللهِ جَلَّ عُلاهُ

    He gives gifts without fearing poverty;

    He trusts in God, exalted in His majesty.

    والجُودُ كُلُّ الجُودِ بعْضُ نَدَاهُ

    Our beloved's giving is like the wind let loose;

    And generosity—all generosity—is but part of his bounty.

    How strange the hearts that stray from guidance,

    While the palm trunk yearns for him—indeed, loves him!

    فالجِذْعُ قَالَ لِفُرْقَةٍ: أَوَّاهُ

    The Chosen One embraces it with a compassionate embrace;

    For the trunk cried “Alas!” at their parting.

    And the beloved speaks to the trunk, offering a choice

    Between flourishing on earth and its life hereafter.

    This trunk chooses its Lord's Paradise,

    To see the beloved, so that its happiness may last.

    Yet we have since fallen back, and no longer

    Even equal the trunk—alas, what sorrow!

    The vile people gathered to kill him,

    And he escaped—glory to Him who saved him!

    هَوَ أَبْتَرٌ واللهِ مَنْ عَادَاهُ

    God's eye surrounds him with care;

    Whoever opposes him is cut off, by God.

    How wondrous the Prophet's Ansar and their love!

    Their allegiance is to him, and to no other.

    قَدْ زَادَ شَوقُهُمو إلى رُؤْيَاهُ

    They went out, Taybah's homes racing ahead of them;

    Their longing to see him had grown.

    Quickly the bearer of glad tidings said, offering congratulations:

    “The beloved has come!” So they rejoiced to meet him.

    فَجَمَالُهُ واللهِ مَا أَبْهَاهُ

    The beloved appeared, his face like a full moon;

    His beauty—by God, how splendid it is!

    فضياءُ كُلِّ الكَوْنِ بعضُ سَنَاهُ

    The light filled our lands and our homes;

    For the light of the whole universe is but part of his radiance.

    And tongues deserving to be severed say:

    “He is a sorcerer! He is a liar!” Far be it from him!

    How strange that someone should harm the Prophet with a word!

    O my Lord, would that his lips were severed!

    How strange that someone should harm the Prophet with his drawing!

    May both his hands be paralyzed for this drawing!

    In “May the two hands perish” lies the punishment of whoever attacked

    The Chosen One one day, or harmed him.

    تَبْكِي الدِّمَا لِشَقَائِهِ عَيْنَاهُ

    He will surely be given his record in his left hand;

    His eyes will weep blood for his misery.

    سَيَظَلُّ خَيْرُ الخَلْقِ في عَليَاهُ

    They were cut off for their deeds and their hatred of him;

    The best of creation will remain in his lofty station.

    God has protected the beloved Muhammad,

    And spared him those who mock.

    O my Lord, I have come to You, desiring

    Pardon for me—will I, I wonder, receive it?

    If You do not pardon, in whom can I hope?

    Who is generous but You, O my Lord?

    O my Lord, be merciful to me at the Resurrection,

    And forgive Your servant what his hands have committed.

    لا تَحْرِمَنِّي في غَدٍ لُقْيَاهُ

    Through the Chosen One, my Lord, complete my joy;

    Do not deny me meeting him tomorrow.

    مَنْ ذا سَيَشْْفَعُ يومَهَا إلاَّهُ

    O my Lord, make him my intercessor before You;

    Who will intercede that day except him?

    At the Resurrection he intercedes, and his intercession is accepted

    Among all beings—who but he can do that?

    واللهِ غَايَةُ مُنْيَتِي رُؤْيَاهُ

    Make him my treasure at the Resurrection, my Master;

    By God, my utmost wish is to see him.

    تَشْتَاقُ عَيْنِي تَرْتَوي بِضِيَاهُ

    I long, O God, to look upon his face;

    My eye longs to drink its fill of his radiance.

    أَشْتَاقُ أَلْثُمُ دائِمَاً يُمْنَاهُ

    I long to breathe in Muhammad's fragrance;

    I long always to kiss his right hand,

    And kiss his feet out of longing for

    The light of the beloved Muhammad, O my Lord.

    Do not deny me a draught from his Kawthar tomorrow,

    So that this heart's thirst may depart,

    So I may taste, from the beloved Muhammad's palm,

    A refreshing cup—my Lord, how clear it is!

    O my Lord, I have praised Muhammad

    To fulfill my heart's wishes.

    If those who praise kings take pride, then I

    Take pride in praising Ahmad, my master.

    فَمَدِيْحُهُ شَرَفٌ .. ومَا أَسْمَاهُ

    I have dedicated my poems to praising him;

    For praising him is an honor—how exalted it is!

    O my Lord, through praising Muhammad, grant me

    A light in my grave that I shall find tomorrow,

    فاقْبَلْ رَجَائِي اليومَ يَا اللهُ

    And upon the Sirat, and when my records are unfolded;

    So accept my plea today, O God.

    O my Lord, send blessings upon the beloved Muhammad,

    And gather Your humble servant beneath the shade of his banner.
