(أَرِقْتُI was sleepless فَبَاتَso remained لَيْلِيmy night لاnot يَزُولُpasses away)
ولاand not أَدْريI know بِحَقٍّtruly مَاwhat أَقولُI say
I lay sleepless, and my night would not end.
I stayed up, so my night lingered endlessly
And truly I do not know what to say.
I know not what I should truly say
كَأَنَّas though الَّليْلَthe night لَيْسَis not لَهُfor it انْتِهَاءٌan end
(ولَيْلُand the night أَخِيone afflicted by المُصِيبَةِcalamity فِيْهِin it طُولُlength)
As though the night had no end.
As if the night has no end
And the night of one afflicted by calamity is long.
And the night of my brother's tragedy is long
(وأَضْحَتْand has become أَرْضُنَاour earth مِمَّاbecause of what عَرَاهَاhas befallen it)
بِنَاwith us تَهويplunges وقَدْand indeed كَادَتْhas almost تَزُولُvanishes
And our earth, because of what has befallen it, is now
Our land has become bare from what afflicted it
plunging with us, and has almost vanished.
It sways with us and almost disappears
تَكَادُalmost الأَرْضُthe earth تَطْويْنَاfolds us up جَميْعَاًall together
(تَكَادُalmost بِنَاwith us جَوانِبُهَاits sides تَمِيلُtilt)
The earth almost enfolds us all;
The land almost folds us altogether
its sides almost tilt with us.
Its sides almost tilt with us
(لَقَدْindeed عَظُمَتْhas grown immense مُصِيبَتُنَاour calamity وجَلَّتْand become grave)
وَحُقَّand is warranted علىover مَهَانِتِنَاour humiliation العَويلُwailing
Indeed, our calamity has grown immense and grave,
Indeed, our affliction has grown great and momentous
and wailing over our humiliation is warranted.
And it behooves our humiliation to wail
رَسُولَO Messenger اللهِof God مَعْذِرَةًpardon حَبِيبِيmy beloved
لِمَاbecause of what فَعَلَdid العِدَاthe foes نَفْسيmy soul تَسِيلُflows out
O Messenger of God, pardon me, my beloved.
Messenger of God, my beloved
Because of what the foes have done, my soul ebbs away.
For what the enemies did, my soul drips
فَمَاfor what رَسَمَdrew الأعاديthe foes مِنْof رُسُومٍdrawings
تُسيئُgive offense لَكُمْto you هوَit الخَطْبُthe calamity الجَلِيْلُgrievous
For the images the foes have drawn,
Whatever the enemies sketch
which offend you, are the grievous calamity.
Evilly dishonors you - it is a grave matter
وكيْفَand how تَطِيْبُis sweet فيin الدُّنيَاthis world حَيَاةٌlife
إذاwhen مَاemphatic particle سُبَّwas reviled فيon الأَرْضِthe earth الرَّسُولُthe Messenger
And how can life in this world be sweet
How can life be sweet in the world
when the Messenger is reviled on earth?
When the Messenger is insulted on earth
(نَبيٌّa prophet كَانَused to يَجْلوclear away الشَّكَdoubt عَنَّاfrom us)
نبيُّthe Prophet of الخَيْرِgoodness لَيْسَthere is not لَهُfor him مَثِيْلُan equal
A prophet who used to clear doubt away from us,
A prophet who would dispel doubts about us
the Prophet of goodness, who has no equal.
The prophet of good, there is none like him
يُزيلُremoves عنِfrom القُلوبِthe hearts الرَّانَthe rust حَقَّاًtruly
(بِمَاthrough what يُوْحىis revealed إليْهِto him ومَاand what يقُولُhe says)
He truly removes the rust from hearts
He removes falsehood from hearts indeed
through what is revealed to him and what he says.
With what is revealed to him and what he says
(ويَهْدِينَاand guides us ولاand not نَخْشَىwe fear ضَلالاًgoing astray )
فَإِنَّfor indeed سَبيلَهُhis path نِعْمَexcellent is السَّبيلُthe path
And he guides us, and we do not fear going astray,
And guides us and we fear no misguidance
for his path—how excellent a path it is!
For his path is the best path
نَرىwe see رَحَمَاتِthe mercies of رَبِّthe Lord of العَرْشِthe Throne تَتْرىcome successively
(عَلينَاupon us والرَّسُولُand the Messenger لنَاfor us دَليْلُa guide)
We see the mercies of the Lord of the Throne coming in succession
We see the mercies of the Lord of the Throne brought down upon us
upon us, and the Messenger is our guide.
And the Messenger is our guide
وقَدْand indeed قَالَsaid الرسولُthe Messenger حديثَa saying of صِدْقٍtruth
« عليْكُمْyou must adhere to سُنَّتِيmy Sunnah (practice) » .. هَديٌguidance جَميْلُbeautiful
« عليْكُمْ سُنَّتِي » ..
And indeed the Messenger uttered a truthful saying:
And the Messenger said a true hadith
“Keep to my Sunnah”—beautiful guidance.
"Upon you is my way" - a beautiful guide
ألاtake heed عَضُّواbite firmly عليهَاupon it واتْبَعوهَاand follow it
ففيهاfor in it الخَيْرُgoodness لَيْسَthere is not لكُمْfor you بَدِيلُan alternative
Take heed: hold it fast with your teeth and follow it,
Lo, bite upon it and follow it
for in it is goodness; you have no alternative.
For in it lies the good, you have no substitute
فَلَمَّاso when أَنْemphatic particle تَرَكْنَاهَاwe abandoned it شَقِيْنَاwe became wretched
ودَرْبُand the road of شَقَائِنِاour misery دَرْبٌa road طَويلُlong
So when we abandoned it, we became wretched,
So when we neglected it we were wretched
and the road of our misery is a long road.
And the path of our misery is long
رَسولَO Messenger اللهِof God ذاthis شِعْريmy poetry إليْكُمْto you
وغَايَةُand the utmost of مُنْيَتِيmy wish مِنْكَfrom you القَبُولُacceptance
O Messenger of God, this poetry of mine is for you,
Messenger of God, my poetry is to you
and my deepest wish is acceptance from you.
And my final destination is your acceptance
رَسولَO Messenger اللهِof God أَشْعَارِيmy poems سُيوفٌswords
بهَاwith them عَنْin defense of قَدْرِكَyour stature السَّامِيexalted أَصُولُI fight
O Messenger of God, my poems are swords;
Messenger of God, my poems are swords
with them I fight in defense of your exalted stature.
With which I champion your sublime worth
ومَاand not نَالواthey harmed رَسولَO Messenger اللهِof God مِنْكُمْfrom you
فَنُورُكَfor your light لَيْسَis not يُدرِكُهُovertakes it الأُفُولُsetting
And they have done you no harm, O Messenger of God,
And they did not attain the Messenger from you
for your light is never overtaken by setting.
For your light cannot be reached by setting
تَزُولُvanish الرَّاسيَاتُthe steadfast mountains بِكُلِّin every أَرْضٍland
وحبُّكَand love for you يَاO حَبِيْبِيmy beloved لاnot يَزُولُvanishes
The steadfast mountains in every land may vanish,
All buildings will disappear from every land
yet love for you, my beloved, never vanishes.
But love for you, my beloved, never disappears
رَسولَO Messenger اللهِof God أَفْديكُمْI would ransom you بِعُمْرِيwith my life
وَعُمْرِيand my life سَيِّديmy master شَئٌa thing قَليْلُsmall
O Messenger of God, I would ransom you with my life,
Messenger of God, I ransom you with my life
and my life, my master, is but a small thing.
Though my life, my master, is little
رَسولَO Messenger اللهِof God طَالَhas grown long الشَّوقُthe yearning مِنِّيfrom me
إلىto لُقْيَاكُموmeeting you فَمَتَىso when الوُصُولُarrival؟!!
O Messenger of God, long have I yearned
Messenger of God, my longing for
to meet you—when, then, shall I arrive?
Meeting you has grown - so when is the arrival?
