    Rain ... rain ...

The beloved’s flute is a poem

lining up at the gate of the trees.

I lined the dew with light,

and it parted to reveal the moon’s face.

    Moon ... rain ...

    Rain ... moon ...

    Here are two banks.

Our ink was ours, and it burned.

We will drink a little of the arrow of parting,

and drink the hoopoe of your footsteps on the earth.

Do not carry my burden now.

I will go a little way into part of my soul,

and go to a path of sand

    and a sorrowful river.

Here, the orange’s sigh is evening.

Here, the cry of wishes is weeping.

Then you will understand that I seek refuge from my blood,

and understand that I flee from my mouth.

We have our face and its features:

a few smiles of a wound.

We have our flesh and our malicious intentions.

Will you reclaim your wounds from me?

    I reclaim my wounds

and flee even to my farthest reaches.

So greet the sea when it sleeps

    and absorbs my soul.

And greet the road to the impossible.

And greet what is said and what is unsaid.

Here are two banks, two banks of the flute. Greet them.

And take a little of my bread.

And take what you wish from the sea, a little from me.

Evening will come as it used to come,

and day will come as it used to come,

    and nothing will come.

Is the stranger who rides with me

    my beloved?

Is the stranger at my door

    my beloved?

Is the stranger in my departure

    and my return

    my beloved?

Then it is time for me to drink my own toast

    and wake a little.

For this time, in which I have nothing,

    is my time.

And this place, in which I have nothing,

    is my place.

So greet the sea; greet it a little.

And say: once, my beloved was here.

Do not wear my palm, and do not ...

    Do not wear it ...

    unless morning sprouts

    upon the string.

This is the heart rising in my song.

Two apples drip upon the arm.

The sail grows taut with the heartbeat.

Have the poets departed ... or ...

    have they not departed?

    I have my image:

a country shaping the oak trees.

    I cried: Wear

all the keys in my palm,

    made of daisies.

A stone ... and it would not have been stone

without you, O glory of the age.

    I have my image:

    the trees’ wedding,

a homeland whose projectiles are stones,

and two hands that do not delay.

    I cried: Wear

my palm, and rest your head

    ***

    only upon sparks.

    ***

    This is my blood.

    Rain ... rain ...

The children are late ... no ...

The children wrap themselves up ... no ...

The children hold back ... no ...

They do not enter the classroom ... no ...

    But they

    grow every day.

    They mingle with the trees.

    They race

to play the melodies of rain.

Their blood is the gazelle of life ... no ...

    they do not fall behind.

    A rush of dew:

    even death

    sighs at their door,

lowers its gaze in shyness before them,

    splits apart, or hesitates.

Daylight draws them close, embraces them,

    and blooms.

    ***

Through them, for them, it is renewed.

    ***

    The boy cried out:

    This is my blood.

The enemies press together ... no ...

    They will not enter

    the sea or our flesh,

    the tide or our skin.

    This air is our air.

The country’s light and its sun

    come from our sun.

This is the breadth of our sky.

History of this land, O our history.

    The boy cried out:

    Shake, and rest your head

    only upon sparks.

  56. ***

    ***

    Rain ... rain ...

    All those I love

drew the country to their chests

and saddled the horses of day.

    They advanced.

    And they advanced.

They wrote across the whole horizon:

The country gives birth to rock in the season of dew.

This is the breadth of their sky.

    And they advanced.

    Those mountains are my fingers.

My heart is the windows that do not bend.

My bones are all the rocks.

My blood is the earth’s covering.

    Its soil is my blood.

A tree, and it does not ... does not bend.

I lined the dew with light.

    I cried: Help!

And it parted to reveal the country’s face.

    And they advanced.

They drew the country to their chests

and saddled the horses of day.

    They advanced.

They went to the gate of dew.

They knocked and did not fear death.

    And they advanced.

    My sword is the place.

My sword is the oak trees standing tall.

My sword is time in all its length.

    My sword is time.
