From which of us comes this sobbing?

    And which of us

had his hands upon the stone?

    Indeed, it unsettled me,

    or unsettled me,

    when I opened my hearing,

that the lightning carried no rain...

And I entered the victim's body, weighed down

by the worries of my rhyme

and what winter gathered from the trees.

And I began from my lyre, as far as my blood,

from all the signs of wandering,

on the road to the string.

    I questioned a girl's face

    about my direction.

She laughed tears and folded inward.

    I questioned her...

Where is the road to my blood?

She laughed tears and turned aside...

    I questioned her...

She cried out and gathered up her soul...

You there, you lost the trail!

And I began from my lyre

    when I noticed the prepositions

    in the road's skin.

    Then I grew doubtful,

and returned from the victim's face, weighed down...

And I began to ask which of us,

    O my friend,

    was the shard,

which of us was the victim?

Then I returned to my wounds

and the bullets that were upon my flesh

    and between my fingers.

    I stared into my face

    and your face,

    so I grew doubtful.

I entered the face of the land, laden

with scorching... and the seven lean ones,

    laden...

    with the bombers,

and the rain dried up in the udder...

  22. * * *

    بلحٌ يداكْ

    * * *

    Your hands are dates.

And my message is dates... when...

your visions bite into my flesh.

In the step of the night journey, I did not...

    complete my love for you...

    O you, O this land,

the song of departure adorned you,

and you did not lean upon the foam.

And behold, your hands are a poem,

    and it has the dates.

You did not take your time memorizing my song...

    and did not...

    did not take your time...

when you withdrew, heading toward the land,

and cried out, 'Do not multiply!'

So for everyone who entered the camp naked,

    or barefoot,

    from the misgivings of chaos...

    dates.

So multiply in the skin of my rhyme,

    and do not... scatter.

Hold fast to my flesh, even if

    the dates fall.

Hold fast to my flesh, even if

    the dates dry up.

For my hands, in every direction,

    are dates for you.

  36. * * *

    يا صاحبي

    * * *

    O my friend,

    أودعْ دمي عندَ الرصيفْ

    strip your pavement from my blood;

leave my blood by the pavement.

My face... and your face... so turn around.

We may meet between the beginning... and the beginning,

    we meet...

in the shade of our tent, which

went hungry at the edge of the pavement.

My face... and your face... which of us

cast off the cloak and burned?

Who turned the steps so that...

    they go toward this drowning?

I grow stronger in you, and you, in...

    my rib, are radiance...

    When I divided my features,

I lost what my face and yours had in common.

So strip off your pavement, or mine,

and enter with me as much of this death as you wish.

    O my friend,

    when I carried the water,

I lost the gardens... and grew doubtful,

    and roamed between the lands.

I went down into every street; I found no

    trees... nor a horse... nor...

so I fell into my apple,

and I saw, amid the splitting of the pregnant navel,

    the eyes of those arriving,

    and a scream,

    and crumbs of provisions.

I hid my face between its two halves... and did not...

    return to my apple...

    and began to howl, lost,

    I howl... and I howl...

Ah, O wound of the land!

    I walk toward my body,

and search for the boundaries of my poem.

And Yu'ad swears that the heart's water did not

descend upon the body of the land...

When I pulled my hands from my apple,

Yu'ad cried out, and did not cry out.

    She gripped my hand...

    and refused to bend...

and I saw how she cracked

    from thirst upon my lyre.

She began gathering what remained of my poem's clouds,

and my poem did not unite with my poem...

    When I carried the water,

I began to roam along all the paths,

and found only the impossible paths.

    I never found Yu'ad.

And Yu'ad, in my apple, as far as my blood,

did not lean, as I did, upon salt and water.

She did not begin from the desert's step,

    did not...

    did not begin...

from a cloud that stood on the edge of the air...

She did not come loose from her root.

And Yu'ad, dewy, invents the morning,

    and goes on her journey;

she does not wear the garment of exile from my blood...

    And I grew doubtful,

    so which of us

    entered the evening?

And I grew doubtful... so which of us,

when I began gathering the flesh of my poem,

tore the garments and wore nothing

    but death,

until I went down to the streets naked,

and stoned your face... then my own?

    I cried out, 'Lean!'

My skin is torn, so lean...

so that we may enter the land hidden away within us both,

and together, when morning comes, we will begin...

    So enter my blood,

and when you lean upon my blood,

    raise your arm; perhaps...

our fingers will hold fast together...

hold fast to the waist of the clouds.
