    In the arteries, blood.

Set my blood ablaze on the road to Haifa,

    once or twice,

    and a thousand times.

    فأنا على هذا الطريق ِ

    Set my blood ablaze.

    For I am on this road;

    those lands draw me,

an ember in the heart draws me.

  5. * * *

    يممتُ شطركِ حاملاً هذا التوحُّدَ

    * * *

I turned toward you, bearing this oneness

    ويداك تنتبهانِ

    with the trees...

    And your hands awaken;

    your hands braid me.

And out of ardor I would pull tight upon the sands,

gather the rhyme of the question,

    pass the dreams along.

The tale trembles within the breast

traveling in the beaks of sparrows—

    the rain...

And I saw your face in the features of a little girl

who alighted on my heart for a long time,

sent forth two apples... and a tear,

and fell upon the edge of the images...

    O this lung, this sail,

who brought down the lip, the arm?

    Two apples upon the land,

and my hand—its fingers are Safad.

She said, "I love you," twice,

and opened my skin to her breaths.

The rain falls, laden with dew and memories.

I do not sing for the butterfly and the moon.

I love nothing but your hands... so carry me,

your broken rib, on this journey...

so that I may wear... or redeem...

This morning knocks on the pavements of reunion.

Always I draw you tight within my clothes,

and gather your face in the sun's presence,

in the crushing of my estrangement...

The gazelle's dowry is the blood in the arteries.

    What lies between us...

    remains... but between us

are this fence and the strangers' darkness...

    So set forth...

Let us dispel the night's pitch darkness... its blackness,

drive back the ravens of darkness...

The dowry of the road to you is blossoms of blood.

You stretch out now within my lung...

    and within my voice...

    absolute to the end,

    forever, so stretch out...

and shattered her breaths as they echoed in my blood.

Then the wings of return glowed in the heart.

I saw your face among the ribs,

and from the fragrance of longing I would clothe myself in you.

    I pass by, spellbound.

Your hands alert me to your hands upon the cross,

and the strangers' footstep in the beloved land

The gazelle's dowry is the blood in the arteries...
