You are cruel to me, though I have committed no sin.

And I did not grumble, but the melody betrayed me:

It turned it into sorrow that moaning laid bare.

So can a lover whose lot is nothingness be blamed?

It is enough for me in love that, faithful to it,

I walk and carry a wound that does not heal.

And I have not complained, for if I am wronged, how many

people before me were wronged under love's law!

    أطوي عَليْها فؤادًا شفّهُ الألَـمُ

    I weep and I laugh, and the two states are one;

I fold around it a heart worn thin by pain.

So if you see my tears laughing,

then tears smile from the crush of pains.

And within my ribs is a throbbing heart; whenever it is storm-tossed

    by sorrows, it writhes, ablaze.

So wrong me as you wish; I do not beg you for mercy.

Indeed, to God we shall appeal for judgment on the Day of Gathering.

Even if you withdraw a hand from me, how often has

a hand from God spread shade whose shelter is blessings!

Through them I shall live, despite injustice, in a haven

of joy, however much sickness weighs me down.
