A stranger lies prostrate at the gate of hope;
A stranger lying at the door of hope
He calls to you in ceaseless anguish and laments.
Calling you, joined by passion, crying in anguish
يهونis bearable عذابtorment الجسمthe body والروحwhile the soul سالمunharmed
فكيفbut how وروحwhile the soul المستهامthe lovestruck one جروحwounded
The body's torment is bearable while the soul is unharmed;
The body's pain is slight, the soul at peace
But how, when the soul of the lovestruck is wounded?
Yet how, when the enthralled soul is wounded?
واهواكand I love you ولكنىbut I اخافI fear واستحىand I am shy
اذاwhen ماan emphatic particle قلتI say قلبىmy heart فىin هواكlove for you جريحwounded
And I love you, but I am afraid and shy
I love you but I fear and feel shy
When I say, 'My heart is wounded in loving you.'
If my heart should say you are its beloved
طريقىmy path اليكto you الوجدardor والسهدand sleeplessness والضنىand wasting
ودمعand tears اداريI conceal فيin الهوىlove ويبوحand they speak openly
My path to you is ardor, sleeplessness, and wasting,
My path to you is ardour, wakefulness and longing
And tears I conceal in love, yet they speak.
My tears flow in love and lament
يقولونthey say لىto me غنىsing وwhile بالقلبin the heart لوعةburning grief
اغنىI sing بهاof it فىin خلوتىmy solitude وانوحand I lament
They tell me, 'Sing,' while my heart holds burning grief;
They say to me, you are rich, yet my heart aches
I sing of it in my solitude, and lament.
I sing of it in solitude and weep
ولىand I have فىon طريقthe path الشوقlonging والليلwhile the night نائمasleep
معالمlandmarks تخفىare hidden تارةsometimes وتلوحand appear
And on the path of longing, while night sleeps, I have
On the path of passion and night slumbering
Landmarks that now are hidden, now appear.
Signposts now hidden, now bright
ولىand I have فىin مقامthe station الوجدardor حالa state نشوةrapture
بسرwith the secret الهوىlove تغدوgoes forth in the morning وفيهand in it تروحreturns in the evening
And in the station of ardor, I have a state of rapture;
In the abode of ardour I have a state of rapture
With love's secret it goes forth in the morning, and in it returns in the evening.
In the secret of love, rising and resting
بكيتI wept منbecause of اللىwhat جرىbefell لىme منfrom عذابهits torment
ولكنbut الهوىlove بالوالهينto the love-stricken يصيحcries out
I wept over what befell me from its torment,
I wept from what I suffered from his torment
But love cries out to the love-stricken.
Yet love in those possessed cries out
