And a vine that dawn watered once more,

Making it drunk on the drink of the clouds,

Flowing over the garden, reviving its fragrance,

Laid low by wine's fire and dead of passion.

We drank cups of it in serenity—

And does anything but wine spread serenity?

Through it my senses stirred, kindling in my head

A blaze of light after the darkness.

It showed me my joy, like my soul's sorrows,

Stirred to misery by a love wronged.

O exposed opening of the well, increase your moaning,

And pour out tears like a torrent of rain.

For you, with your whispers, revive a garden,

And its blossoms shine like pearls.

But as for me, my moaning and my tears

Bear no fruit with the passing of time,

Except distance from a goal I would ransom

With the gleams of my eye and the moon's light.

And whoever yearns for a far-off goal

    Lives on embers among humankind.

Thus I kept sipping my wine from dawn,

Until night enfolded the spirit of day,

Amid the clamor of birds in the thickets, drunk

With their longing to reach a resting place.

Then this world embraced its darkness,

And slept deeply, as the seas sleep.

And nothing remained but the eyes of bright stars

And a stream winding in dejection.

Scenes that engrossed my feelings and my senses,

So I withdrew with my soul into reflection.

I awoke to a breath of breeze,

Restoring to the soul what had been lost,

And to the radiance of a full moon risen on high,

Pouring molten gold over the universe.

Breeze and light were, to the mind,

A sunrise in which the daughter of the grape blazed.

A beauty through which enchantment revived my soul,

Just as the dream-vision revived the lover's soul.

I journeyed from it toward hopes, and they vanished

With the star, as every lovesick lover grows drunk.
