لحنُthe melody الرحيلِdeparture المرِّbitter..والجرحُand the wound
والحبُّand love والأشعارُand poems والبوْحُand the outpouring
The melody of bitter departure—and the wound,
The tune of departure is bitter..and the wound
And love, and poems, and the outpouring,
And love and poetry and confession
والأمنياتُand wishes …وذِكْرُand remembrance منthose whom نهوَىwe love
منfrom هذهthese الأشياءthings لاnot نصْحُوwe awaken
And wishes, and remembrance of those we love—
And wishes...and remembering the beloved
From these things we do not awaken.
Of these things we do not recover
نغفوwe doze علىupon أنْداءِdewdrops ذاكرةٍa memory
فيَرِفُّthen flutters فوقabove رؤوسناour heads الفرْحjoy
We doze upon a memory's dewdrops,
We sleep to the echoes of a memory
Then joy flutters above our heads.
So happiness flutters above our heads

No sooner do we row toward our laughter
No sooner do we row towards our laughter
Than salt drives us apart.
Than...salt separates us
لاnot تَفْهمُunderstand الأشواقُlongings أحرُفَناour letters
الشوقُlonging ليسis not يشدّهcaptivates it الطرحُexposition
Longings do not understand our letters.
Yearning does not understand our letters
Longing is not captivated by exposition.
Yearning is not drawn by prose
هوit كافرٌa disbeliever بالوزنِin meter …لوeven if كُتبتwere written
لعيونِهِfor its eyes الأشعارُpoems والمدحُand praise
It has no faith in meter, even if one wrote
It is an unbeliever in meter...if poems
Poems and praise for its eyes.
Were written for its eyes, and praise

And longing, at first, is merriment;
And yearning’s first business is departure
And when it takes hold in the heart, it is a spear.
And if it settles in the breast it is destruction
عِطْرٌa fragrance يبلّلناwets us كأغنيةٍlike a song
ويُذيبُناand melts us منfrom صوتِهاits voice نَفْحُa waft
A fragrance that drenches us like a song,
A perfume that moistens us like a song
And a waft from its voice melts us.
And melts us with its voice’s breath
ومُبارزٌand a duelist ..حمَلَbore الهوىpassion سيفاًas a sword
لاno عفْوَpardon يُقنعُهُpersuades it ولاand no صلْحُtruce
And a duelist who bore passion as a sword,
A challenger..who carried passion as a sword
No pardon persuades it, nor any truce.
Neither pardon satisfies him nor peace

It comes without a promise, shaking our hands,
He comes without promise, shakes our hand
As though it were erasing our suns.
As if he is erasing our suns

Even if sores from its injustice touch us,
If we are touched by his injustice with a wound
No wound from our injustice touches it.
We are not touched by his injustice with a wound

أقسىcruelest عدوٍّenemy طبعُهُits nature سمْحُgracious
The most faithful and generous of our nighttime companions,
More faithful and nobler than our companion
The cruelest enemy, whose nature is gracious.
Crueler in nature than a kind enemy
الشوقُlonging أقربُnearest ضِحكةa laugh كذبتْlied
وأمَرُّand bitterest ليلٍnight خانَهbetrayed it صبحُdawn
Longing is the nearest laugh that lied,
Yearning is the dearest lie a smile has told
And the bitterest night betrayed by dawn.
And the bitterest night that morning has betrayed
نلتاعُwe suffer anguish منهfrom it ولاand do not نُفَسّّرُهwe explain it

ونُحِسُّand we feel جمرَتَهُits ember .. ولاand no شرْحُexplanation
We ache from it, yet do not explain it,
We enjoy it and do not interpret it
And we feel its ember—yet there is no explanation.
And sense its embers..and no explanation

It is a breeze that slays us before dawn,
It is a breeze..that takes us by surprise at dawn
And doves whose stabs are lamentation.
And doves..whose pecking is lament
فيin الصدرِthe breast منfrom أمواتِهاtheir dead صَرْحُa lofty edifice
Longing? This longing is questions;
Yearning? This yearning is questions
In the breast stands an edifice of their dead.
In the chest its dead awaken a tomb
لمdid not تَكْتُبِwrite الدنياthe world إجابتَهاtheir answer
فنظلُّso we remain ..لاnot نغفوwe doze ولاand not نصحوْwe awaken
The world has not written their answer,
The world has not written their answers
So we remain, neither dozing nor waking.
So we remain..neither sleeping nor waking
