    تُفرّقنا وتجمعُنا الدروبُ

    We are hearts held captive by hearts;

paths part us and bring us together.

We pass through the streets of days as a memory

that sunset scatters in its cruelty,

and as a fragrance gone astray in the silence of cafés,

seeping from the past through holes.

In silence, we shake hands with the love of eyes

that deceitful hope adorns for us.

    يُسامِحُنا اليقينُ  ولا نتوبُ

    So we forget them and persist in willful blindness;

certainty forgives us, yet we do not repent.

And souls mingle with us, so we soar

as floating phantoms that never return.

We see the secret of immortality as a delicate fragrance,

    like breezes melting within us.

We interpret the moment of meeting, and we know

that our talk of it is an escape.

Have we come, then, because love is an illusion,

or do flaws keep humankind alive?

A pure soul dies of reproach,

    believing that sins are sins.

And had it held any power over either matter,

no fragrances would have passed through its world.
