    Poetry's stature dreads those rhymes,

and you choose meanings from the injustice of reproach.

For on the surface of words you were reproachful,

and in the depths of the letters' secrets, aloof.

You imagined that the dear friend had grown weary of love,

and that yesterday's beloved had become an enemy.

So how could I, when truth is the field toward which I turn,

be like others, with nothing against me and nothing for me?

At times you reproach me over a moment of serenity,

and show displeasure if I breathe out what is within me.

But, by God, I do not intend estrangement,

nor has it crossed my mind to shun brotherhood.

And the bond between me and the one who reproaches me,

a bond of affection, is more apt to raise steadfast mountains.

So the passing of days cannot undo my affection,

nor can the force of distress erase my words.

So trust, O lifelong friend, that my limbs

age my wine through the years of the steeped brew,

and that the turns of time are, to me, a fable,

and that mountains of distance kindle my passion.

For you and my loved ones are the lanterns of my qibla,

and every prayer of the good-hearted is my prayer.

So do not let illusions occupy our dwelling,

nor mistake the book's opening for marginal notes.

When loved ones bare the forearm of love,

the stars of the spiteful fall before me.

And it is not for one like me to harbor enmity

toward one who has settled in my soul and become my heart's brother.

“And pasture may spring up” upon the back of a rock,

and the garden's roses may one day harbor vipers.

The feeble verse did not offend me; rather,

my standing recoils from seeing you go to excess.

You went far in excess and thought that I

was aloof when, in distress, I consoled myself.

I am the one whose book has held the oppression of time,

and built all kinds of cares into diversions.

I send you my reply as perfume and balm,

and hope my fragrance will be the comforter.
