O neighbor of the palms, O lyre of eternity,

    Bring your song of fragrance and love;

Bring your song, a murmur filling the dawn,

And awaken the shore, drunk on kisses.

In the light it dances naked across an eternity

    Of palms—strange, enchanting, dewy.

Dictate to my lips a melody, to my pen

A poem, a daughter of the shore, never yet uttered.

    لم يُسٌَها الليلُ في أكوابهِ الأُولِ

    It has not flowed through a string, nor run through a nerve;

Night has not [verb unclear] it in its earliest cups.

O neighbor of the palms, the Gypsies' thread steals me

From my intoxication and the dream's remnants in my eyes.

Restore to me my green visions; do not let

The hand of day frighten the night; do not ask!

    The virgin tent—this silence—is a masterpiece,

God's poem; this silence calls out to me.

Spread over me the cover of enchantment, and recline

Within my thoughts, a rapture spreading like hope,

Like a forest beyond forests, in which strays

My poetry, wandering across its drunken shimmer.

Journeying has worn down my youth; so leave my thirst

Upon the island, for me to water it at leisure.

I sleep for a few brief moments, drifting away on

The outskirts of virgin paradise, away from my boredom.

I drift away from my wakefulness, while the road crushes me,

The road of defiance—we have traveled it, and still do.

The shore welcomed me yesterday, and prepared for me

What cannot be said; my friend, the shore, prepared it for me.

Do not wake me; for a moment I shall forget my sleeplessness.

I say to sorrow: 'Depart from my eyelids!'

Sindbad is a sail that rests upon

My pillow and lazily gathers up the sea.
