    The fire is kindled in the questions’ remains.

    Its smoke has night-time talk that stirs the imagination.

    And the throats of oblivion sent forth their communion

    as a flowing melody here—how beautiful it is!

    ‏بيني وبين البحر فلْكٌ مرسلَةْ

    And I am she who drew her writing’s pauses near;

    between me and the sea, a ship sent forth.

    ‏سُكِبَ المداد على سطورٍ مُهْمَلَةْ

    My jinni is blue within her goblets;

    the ink was poured onto neglected lines.

    The language of speech—its blessings came in succession

    and scattered over the lips, moistening them.

    A twilight glow from the longing that I neglected

    hints in vain, while life is at a standstill.

    Forgive me, Shakespeare: enduring you is no longer

    a flicker of life, when the question’s veins run dry!
