والريشةُ الصماء يغرقها دمي
Most breaths I draw in my world slay me,
And my blood drowns the deaf quill.

كيلا يطوف الزيف حول توهمي
For meaning, I stripped off a cloak of austerity,
So falsehood would not circle my imaginings.

Lie slain, with death secretly wooing them,
As though their final resting place were here: my mouth!

It struts within my wound as a lofty prince,
And half of valor belongs to its army.

كرَّ الشعور مباغتًا لتبرمي؟!
And whenever speech flees evasively,
Does feeling charge back by surprise, to my exasperation?!

Between me and poetry lies a youthful promise;
My thirst is still innocent, dreaming, tender.

I alone see a half-line of poetry as a pulpit,
Where I lavished my composure and my dry ablution.

The metrical feet of grain-ears buried their root
In my notebook; my lexicon reveals their visions.

Until, when my clouds' tears fell,
The details of peace said: “Pour down, pour down!”
