And suppose I woo the mirage,

if poetry makes you pour forth still more!

My wounded outpouring will remain dedicated

for love's sake, seeking no reward.

And I pour my confession into your labyrinth,

and the echo's denial floats as mist.

I am the daughter of distance; my travels are abundant,

and my poem's voice rises in estrangement.

With my eye I drew the river of the heart's recesses,

pure and sweet, making the barren wasteland sprout.

The familiar colocynth dissolved my voice,

and from its bitterness it flowed as sweet saliva,

    ‏فأجرعُ   عَذب َ رحلتها عذابَا

    like choking gulps the seconds force me to swallow;

so I swallow the sweetness of their journey as torment.

    ‏لهيبتها  الحروفُ حنتْ رِقابا

    And poetic inspiration dwells in me, ascending;

in awe of it, the letters bowed their necks.

My poetic contest is with the pregnant rains,

and I open a door to the unknown expanse,

confident that the wind is against me,

so that it may lift the veil from my mawwals.

I am the daughter of distance, the daughter of the deserts,

and my whirlwind—I besiege it, striving for mastery!
